High quality, slightly complex, but so much fun!
First off I have to say that EVERYTHING in this set is super high quality for a starter set, right down to it coming with premade characters. The booklets are of a higher standard than I expected, the box is wonderfully solid, the art on everything is beautiful, and the dice are solid. Nothing in this set is done without a purpose, including the off colour d10 which is off colour so that you can roll with advantage or disadvantage. I've been playing D&D for years so getting into Call of Cthulhu was much easier for me, but I could hand this to someone who'd never played Tabletop RPG's and they could get the hang of it.a few criticisms; The language used in this is a bit advanced, but I suppose that is to be expected with eldritch horror. The handouts and character sheets are clingy and difficult to pull away from one another. The layout of the adventures are a bit difficult for a new Story Keeper if they've never been a game master before (advising roleplay with sometimes little to no direction) though at times the opposite is true, wherein it holds the hand of new game masters really well. Finally the biggest issue is the difficulty curve it has for understanding the mechanics in general (to an extent), the books often do a poor job of explaining how certain actions are meant to play out, Primarily combat.regardless of these nitpicks this is an INCREDIBLY worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in Call of Cthulhu, ESPECIALLY if they aren't sure they'll like the game enough to warrant the slightly high cost of the main rulebook and player's handbook for 7th Edition.

One of the best RPG starter sets I’ve ever seen.
If you are even remotely interested in RPGs and/or the Cthulhu mythology and setting, consider picking this up. It comes with everything you need to not only play the game, but LEARN it in an interactive way. One of the three books is dedicated to teaching you how to play the game by actually having you play a really fun (and pretty long!) solo adventure. It works kind of like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, but teaches you how the character sheet and stats work, and how to use them to play the game, as well as introduces you to the setting and has a fun story! After that, there is a set of the basic rules for the game, and three MORE adventures to play with a group of your friends. It includes dice, maps, player handouts and aids too.A great way to start playing a great RPG!

Great intro. Not the Free PDF. Green Dice.
For the price it’s great. The content (the writing) is excellent. Well done. Many other RPG games would do well to take note of this introductory pack and method. Happy I purchased it.Questions I had before buying: book two is the rule book. It’s not identical to the free QuickStart pdf. Sure it has a lot of the same rules etc., but it’s NOT simply a print copy of that pdf. You will still want to download the free PDF. (It’s free. Why not?)I don’t believe the adventures in this introductory box are printed anywhere else. So, again it’s not the free PDF adventure.Surprisingly happy to discover that my enclosed dice were green, with a blue % die. (Unlike others who said they were gray.)Bad: I found the paper to be very delicate and thin. Felt like anything other than an extremely cautious handling might crimp, crumple, tear the pamphlets. I’m generally gentle with my books to begin with, but this feels like the kind of material that would slip inside a folder binder and rip free.I’m not saying it’s cheap, just delicate. I’m saying, you’ll want the full rules in hardcover to travel to game night.Super excited. Now I just need another player or two.

This is how a starter set is done!
the way this box is made is brilliant! other role-playing games should take notes!what's inside is a single sheet whats in the box.first book is Alone Against the Flame. an EXCELLENT solo adventure to get the feel of the game, in a choose-your-own-adventure style play. it's free online as a pdf but packaged in this box is really good!the next book is the rules and how to run a game, which is handy, well written.finally 3 scenarios that are classics in the Call of Cthulhu line, re-written for modern play, and my players are i LOVE them! especially Edge of Darkness!overall, if you want a game that is NOT D&D and is skilled focus, this is the game and this box set is the perfect starting point! if you want to run more games i suggest the Doors to Darkness book. more scenarios that are new Keeper friendly.

Fun to play; difficult to expand.
This was a very fun TTRPG. It is playable (and quite enjoyable) with only 1 player. The rules are similar enough to other TTRPGs it is not difficult to pick up.The pre-written modules are fantastically fun! They really engross you in the universe and maintain the creepy Lovecraftian tone. The only downside I found was some of the rules (such as character creation) were simplified for the starter set and do not match the rules in other Call of Cthulhu books. This caused some character creation kinks that needed to be worked. Learning the starter set will not adequately prepare you to run your own game.

First Time? Buy it. Great place to start.
Great way to get your feet wet into Call of Cthulhu. You can sneak away with using this as your only rule guide until you start getting into more complicated rules for scenes like car chases and machine gun use (which gets SERIOUSLY complicated). Chaosium also offers some free resources for a good starter scenario from their site if you dig around enough but this comes with some permafrost characters and a few scenarios you can run.The Keepers guide is the next guide you may want to buy, as it goes into more details for min/maxing characters and the more in depth rules for more complicated events. It also goes more in depth into the 1920s-30s as a time era including standard costs of regular items your players may wish to buy. The players guide, though handy, isn’t necessary unless you really want to customize your characters with hardcore rules. The quick development method taught by this guide is a good place to start because your characters in CoC are very squishy and aren’t necessarily “heroes” in the traditional sense. People will often end up dying or in an asylum. If you’d like to get into more of a “pulp” setup (think heroic antics like Indiana Jones) you may also want to invest in the “Pulp Cthulhu” resource, which makes characters more badass and way harder to kill. All in all this is a great place to start and more than sufficient for most new keepers and players. You’ll know after a session or two if this is your thing, or whether you’d rather stick with other, more traditional tabletop RPG.

Best Entry into a RPG I have ever read...
Best entry into the game. Better than other RPGs on the market. Especially the solo game let’s the keeper experience the game and learn the rules quickly. Why are other RPGs not using this way of teaching rules?

Very nice introduction to a classic role playing game.
This box set is an excellent starter for anybody wanting to try out call of Cthulhu. The game is a classic eldritch horror and investigation role playing game based on the Cthulhu myths of H. P. Lovecraft. It contains a basic rule set, a solo adventure in which you can create your first ‘investigator’ character and learn the rules by playing a scenario and a book of introductory adventures for a games master (‘Keeper of arcane secrets’) to run with a group. It includes character sheets with details of some pre-set starter characters and some blank character sheets as well as a set of dice. It also has some handouts of documents which players might discover during their investigations. The set contains three booklets, which are attractively produced. The game itself was adapted from Runequest, one of the original role playing games invented shortly after the creation of Dungeons and Dragons. In addition to the usual role playing mechanics a unique feature of the game is the player’s ‘sanity’ score. Sanity is reduced by discovering or encountering horrific beings and events and as it reduces the character can be incapacitated by delusions or hallucinations until being driven completely insane (although there is some hope of recovery by psychiatric treatment or being admitted to an asylum)! The game can be set at any time but the usual setting is in the early twentieth century (think Indiana Jones, Agatha Christie and the works of Lovecraft, himself)Overall, this is a very well thought out and nicely produced introduction to a classic role-playing game. Even if you have never played a role playing game before, this is definitely worth trying out.
