In the spirit of Roy and Gene
Another entertaining Western from James J. Griffin, who captures the feel of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry movies in his books. His stories are grounded in history, with attention to geographic detail, horse savvy, wholesome and family-oriented without being sweet and sappy. Bad things do happen to good people in his books, but as with any proper Western, the good people come out on top after some justified rootin', tootin', and shootin'. I've been a fan of Jim's for a long time, and his work continues to improve with each new release.

This is what I am looking for
This Lone Star Ranger series hit home for me. The characters are believable and Nate, the focal character is one to quickly become friends with. I like the explanations to all of the pieces and the culture of the West within the story, as an "Easterner" has no clue and has to learn the ropes of the West. Great characters, white hat vs black hat throughout, and grit action. Loved it!

OK
Not that great...short stories (120 pages) which the author drags out to 10 books... why not write a 300 page western Adventure involving Nate becoming a a Texas Ranger instead of dragging it out in multiple novels for sale. I’m one and done.

Can't read just one
This is the first novel of a series to come obviously. I love stories about Texas Rangers and that is what this is. A young man, Nate, who loses his family to some really bad guys and is rescued by the Rangers and taken under their wing. A good story with some historical info about the Rangers. The only problem with the book is that the ending was left up in the air to be continued in the next book, which isn't out yet. I personally will purchase the next book but if I didn't want to I would feel "bushwhacked"!

Lone Star Ranger
James J. Griffin continues to write great western stories of courage, loyalty and bringing justice for the fallen victims in this first book of the Lone Star Ranger Series, A Ranger To Ride With. Mr. Griffin brings to life the era and landscape with each of the books that he has written about the times and adventures of the Texas Rangers. Looking forward to the second installment of this series, A Ranger To Reckon With. I highly recommend this book and all other books written by James. J. Griffin. Mr. Griffin's books are great reads for the young and the old to enjoy.

When life hits hard you grow up fast
This was a great clean western in the genre I grew up with. I loved the detail accounts of how to saddle a horse and shoot a gun. I also loved the humour that only come in a camp from stuff in boots to pulling cactus spines out of backside.

Great series for YA and adults
I've just discovered this author, and I'll be reading more of his work! This is a historically accurate book that will appeal to any age. There's enough action scattered between the wealth of information about the Texas Rangers and their lives to keep the book moving, and Nate is a sympathetic and realistic character. I'll be getting the rest of the series for sure.
