Time Functioning Patterns: Book & CD Paperback – October 1, 1994

Excellent for building independence and timing. It is a little difficult to figure out how to use the drills if you are not great at sight reading music. I have to count through each one ahead of playing it and write down the count for each beat. I counted most as sixteenth notes to get used to the timing, I am not sure if that is correct.

This book was recommended by my drum teacher - it is excellent - we are working on independents using the fat back beats in the book combined with various hi hat and ride patterns!

Chaffe's fat-back sheet alone is worth the price. He has pared "drum-beats" down to 22 fundamental bass-drum slots. Learn these, and you'll be able to play and break-down almost anything you hear drummers playing. The linear ideas in the back are great for time and fills, and will clue you into where so many great drummers are coming from. Chaffee gives you all the tools in simplified, logical form; you put the blocks together and make the music.

Chaffee teaches you a system that he has been teaching the abosolute best in the business for the past 40 years. Steve Smith, Vinnie C. Jonathan Moffet, JR Robinson just to name a few. A Masterpiece that will make you a better musician!

I now have 4 books by Gary Chaffee he has cutting edge ideas and offers real drum education but you have to "work through it all."

Just very good overall. Has Rock and Jazz and more. Really improves your individuality of your feet and hands.

This is a great book for working on time and creativity.

Beginner and intermediate drummers will benefit tremendously from this book.

At first glance it looks a bit odd this book as the parts are written in a very minimalist way. Once you’ve read the first few pages of info (yeah I went straight to the parts) it makes sense and you realise it’s a challenging book. Well worth the price tag.
