Mitutoyo 293-340-30 Digital Micrometer IP65

The Micrometer is accurate and easy to use. There are cheaper ones but non as good as Mitutoyo.

Superb Mitutoyo quality. I got these at a great price for my home workshop. Accuracy is spot on when tested on my gauge blocks, all I need to do is get that accurate in my own work! Only slight downside is the box could be a bit better quality.

For those who are more alert than me, the thimble of this unit is marked in thousandths of an inch, not millimetres. A conversion of imperial to metric can simply be done by pressing a button, but if the battery is flat the thimble will not help, without a few maths.

I don't know what other people use this for but I have been looking for this instrument to measure the thin wood shavings coming out from my Japanese hand plane. That's the only use case I have. Look, I got 38 Micron, not too bad since I ain't a professional wood working person. There is no way those Made in China tool can match the precision level of Mitutoyo. Yes, this is expensive but it does worth every penny, this pushes me to pull thinner shavings, probably take couple more years of practice to go down close to 10-15 Micron. Strongly recommended!!!! Must buy!

In my 25 years of machining I have used lots of mics and own several older mitutoyos. Digitals I always borrowed from QA when I wanted one. This is my first personal digital mic and I am extremely happy with the purchase. The "QuantuMike" was the best for a while with its superior accuracy - but I just did not like them. I know they are great, but something about the 2mm per turn and the all in one plastic ratchet thimble bothered me. I have never liked "slip thimbles". I am glad I waited. This 293-340-30 model now has the same incredible incredible +/- .00005 inches accuracy as the QuantuMike but has the traditional style all metal thimble with a separate (albeit plastic) ratchet. With a few ratchet clicks it will repeat to the half tenth mark every time and I can quickly get it to within a half tenth mark of that with just my own one-handed no-ratchet tension for fast non critical checking. This mic also has some heft to it, which I see as a plus. Everything on it is finished beautifully - all you would expect with the best. Highly recommended for anyone a bit more "old school" who wants the best of current tech. ;)
