Gears of War Omnibus, Vol. 1 Paperback – December 18, 2018

The illustrations were incredibly easy to visualize as well as impeccably detailed! I was really impressed with the flawless nature of the stories and the style of narrating. It really does bridge the gap between Gear's One & 2. It also highlights some of the initiatives taken by THE COG to ensure prosperity and survival which was fascinating. I thought the backdrop on some of the additional character's was really interesting. I look forward to downloading the second volume in the near future!

It fills in a good gap of what happens in between games if you like comics you will like this

It really shows how much people are affected outside of characters who are Cog, it also shows more of Marcus's and Dom's friendship and how they have to deal with Maria missing

As a Gears fan, I can only say that this is a must buy for any fans of the franchise. The story and art quality are superb. Physically speaking, and something I don't normally think about, but the quality of the paper this is printed on is fantastic.

I baught this so I could stick posters to foam board to make them sturdier

This is an amazing book. It tells the story to fill in gaps during Gears 1 and Gears 2. We’re introduced to Barrick who is a fan favorite and Jace who are introduced in Gears 3. Also we see other stories that explain a few things from other soldiers in Gears 2 before going into a new story.Unfortunately it loses a star due to no protective wrapping and another due to damage sustained during shipping. I took it out of the package and the book is already damaged and looks like I had read it for years or it had been stuck behind my bookshelf.

Sou suspeito pra falar dessa HQ, pois adoro a série Gears. Eu curti muito e já comprei o volume 2, mas não sei se quem nunca jogou os jogos vai curtir tanto quanto. Não é uma HQ que é muito falado no meio dos leitores de quadrinhos, mas não é por falta de qualidade.

Es un cómic de buen tamaño, bien elaborado y con unas imágenes simplemente preciosas.

Insider look between gears 1-3 very harsh in depth stories I was pleasantly surprised and finished it in 1 sitting

The Gears of War Omnibus Vol. 1 collects issues #1-13 and bridges the gap between the first Gears of War and it's sequel. This series of Gears of War by Joshua Ortega and Liam Sharp lasted from 2008-2012 with 24 issues published. Since there will be another 11 issues left I imagine a second volume omnibus will be released in the future that could perhaps have some extras like artwork panels, interviews, maybe a script to make up for being shorter than this by a few issues. Although there are 13 issues in this omnibus they are split into different arcs, the first is Hollow (#1-6) The Quickening (#7) which is a single issue story, Harper's Story (#8) another single issue story and Barren (#9-13) which is a 5 part story.The first thing that I noticed was the size of this collection, it's smaller than DC or Marvel comics but still is not too small where it feels congested (if that's the right word). The artwork is great and consistent throughout, really capturing the brutality and gore of the games. The pacing is fast paced and I believe you'll be finding yourself flipping through the story quite quickly in some parts and slightly slower in other, this isn't really a heavy dialogue story, letting the artwork leave it up to your imagination. I was glad to see there was strong language in these comics, it's fitting and it makes sense, they are in war they don't care about watching their language and also mixing in some sayings Dom and Marcus would use in the game. It was also fun to reminisce with Dom and Marcus as they were discussing going through parts of the first game, making you recall your experiences as you read.Hollow #1-6 written by Joshua Ortega and Liam Sharp. These issues are focused on Jace from Gears 3, providing backstory and introducing us to this character between the first and second game. It has been several years since I played Gear 2 and 3 so I'm not sure if much or any of his backstory is mentioned in the games but I'm playing through the first game now making reading this even more engaging. Overall I thought it was a decent story.Next is The Quickening (#7) with Ortega but with Simon Bisley doing the penciling. As I already stated, this is a single issue story focused on Tai from Gears 2, here we see Tai and Marcus Fenix meet during the pendulum wars up to where he is found after being taken prisoner. Overall a great story, I wish it was fleshed out more because Tai is a character that deserves more backstory than this single issue, it also goes through things quite quickly sadly. The artwork looks slightly different but still appealing. Like I said, only downside is I wish it was longer.We go onto Harper's Story (#8) which is another single issue arc written by Joshua Ortega and art from Liam Sharp, Henry Flint, Joel Gomez and Trevor Hairsine. This issue focused on Sergeant Jonathan Harper. He and Barrick (introduced in Hollow) experienced the lightmass bomb and catch an illness, soon after are shipped back out to war with the return of the locust. A short story with a gap that bugs me and I wish an extra page or two were included to make it not abrupt, which is joining Delta Squad and we jump to him saving a girl, I'll leave it at that. Overall wasn't bad, I think it should have been expanded on more and in a sense this is a less interesting story than The Quickening. Here as far as I'm aware I have no recollection of Harper but then again it's been several years since I've played Gears of War 2 (I'm currently playing through ultimate edition right now) so it could be a character mentioned or even seen but I forgotten. I'll edit the review if I find his significance or if he's just a character created for this story.Lastly we have Barren (#9-13) written by Joshua Ortega and Michael Capps and art from Liam Sharp and help from Leonardo Manco from #11. The story is that Delta Squad and Sigma are joined once again and given a mission from control after a distress beacon has been discovered at a place that had been attacked months ago, even so since the human population is so low that if there's a chance for survivors it's worth it. This was probably the highlight of the collection for me, it was well written, introduces great characters with motives and personality and also shows another side of what the war has caused humanity to resort to for survival. This made the experience all the more enjoyable and has now made me wonder what other wrongdoings could be done to try and turn the tide of war, overall a gripping story.So for the collection overall, I think it's fantastic and any Gears fan would be happy picking this up, especially someone who plays the campaign's regularly and wants more. I feel the artwork was well done and able to capture how gruesome Gears can be but not so much to overdo it. The colors were well done but I don't feel it was as dark as the games and I think that's to highlight the artwork which it does well. The stories were great except in my opinion the single issue stories needed more as I simply wanted more Tai and for Harper I just wasn't as interested and as short it was didn't help either. I can't wait to see what the second omnibus offers us, hopefully it comes out soon and offers extras or longer issues to make up for less issues. This is a great addition to any Gears fan collection.Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.

I love Gears of war. My first game ever on xbox and god, dom was my character.I played all games in the GOW franchise, read the books by karen travis, i just love my gears.And this Omnibus is amazing! I love the art, the extra paintings in it, i love the characters (wow baird is really such an ass 🤣, still love him).It contains shorter stories about several characters, taking you deep into the world of gears of war, showing and explaining some back ground. Each story itself is catching, disturbing and stirring, goes straight to the heart. Showing how humankind of sera is fighting against extinction against an enemy that never yields, and sometimes giving up any humanity itself in the course.Lots of blood and gore, lots of sadness and Anger, but also joy.Shed some tears over this comic..I highly recommend it. Not for kids of course.
