The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French (Illustrated Edition) (Dodo Press) Paperback – Illustrated, April 17, 2009

My first Calla Edition was Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edgar Allan Poe. It is a work of extraordinary beauty and I've been collecting the various titles issued by Calla Editions since. Here's what I've noted: The quality of each Calla Edition up to 2011 is superior in terms of binding, paper quality, the illustrations, and content. These Calla Editions are a must-have in every collector's library and will bring great pleasure to bibliophiles. The Calla Editions printed in and prior to 2011 were printed in the United States and are of stellar quality, whereas those printed in 2012 onwards were manufactured in China, and the change in quality is noticeable - the bindings look and feel cheap, and do not hold up well (I own two of these inferior Calla Editions), the paper is thick yet not as creamy or smooth like the previous editions, and the illustrations do not feel glossy either. So buyers of the later (2012 and after) editions might want to be aware of this.Happily, "The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales" is of superior quality (published in 2011 and manufactured in the USA). Four fairy tales are collected in this edition, three by Charles Perrault, i.e. The Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard, and Cinderella, and the last is by Madame de Villeneuve, Beauty and the Beast. Here, the four tales are translated from the old French and retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, with 30 exquisite illustrations by Edmund Dulac.These fairy tales as retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch retain the flavor of the originals and I think they are best suited more for older children and adults than for younger children. There are morals presented at the end of each fairy tale which I found interesting and amusing. For example at the end of Blue Beard, the moral of the story is presented thus:Moral(For Curious Wives)Wives should have one lord only. Some have reckon'dIn Curiosity t' enjoy a second.But Scripture says we may not serve two masters,And little keys have opened large disasters.Another(For Chastising or Correcting Husbands)The very best sermon that ever was preach'dWas a thought less effective the longer it reachedThe book is printed on 100# Utopia II Ivory paper and is bound in Skivertex

Absolutely beautiful edition, with a leather (or something like it) cover and beautiful illustrations that I wish there were more of! Feels luxe and looks gorgeous as a coffee table book.

Disappointed it's missing the front cover sticker and that was not posted in description.

This book was quite bigger than I thought it would be, but I actually love it's storybook size and beautiful pictures! Great for display or for reading to little ones!

If you are thinking to buy this book - don't. It is a poorly copied version of the stories. You'd be better off buying an actual reprint, especially for the money. This was pricey and poor quality. Other reviewers are misleading as they are referring to an actual reprint, not a copy.

My daughter bought this for herself with some Christmas money. It was a bit expensive, but she read it from start to finish in less than a week and plans to keep it as a treasure to re-read whenever she wants.

You can't get more illustrations if he didn't do them,but I wanted more illustrations. They are lovely!

This is the most beautiful book I have ever owned. Still obsessed with fairy tales in my twenties this beautiful edition did not disappoint. It's exquisitely beautiful and a future heirloom I'll treasure for my grandchildren.
