Finally--something really new in cookbooks
Picture Cook is such a unique concept for a cookbook. Not your average cookbook, by any means--this is truly a picture book--all recipes defined in drawing form. As an experienced cook, I looked at the recipes with such an appreciation for the simple, clear lay out. I truly wish I'd had such a book 40 years ago to help me understand the steps involved in a recipe. I can remember reading recipes, re-reading them, trying to understand concepts. Even now with the chefs on TV, the true mechanics of a recipe still have to be interpreted by the cook. Well, this is a book of understanding recipes through drawings; it breaks down the techniques of cooking into simple to understand steps. The illustrations are so funny and clever, I don't want to give anything away, but the drawing of letting an item just stand is quite brilliant. While the author is witty and a very skilled illustrator, the recipes are great too--the author adds twists and tweaks to create a very contemporary compilation of recipes. Her White Lasagna illustrations may be the best way I've ever seen to describe the composition of a lasagna. I think this would be an awesome grandparent/grandchild teaching cookbook to share--almost as a story book, with lots of fun to pictures to laugh at together. I think it's a great concept for the beginning cook--teenager, or someone going off to college--they will be entertained by the drawings and won't have to suffer through tedious written instructions which just seem vague to the new cook. I think this is a clever book for the experienced cook (who has a library of standard cookbooks). He/she can smile at the illustrations, enjoy the humor in them and learn some new recipes.Finally!--something really new in cookbooks.

A smart and creative cookbook for beginners
Picture Cook builds your confidence and presents healthful cooking in an engaging way! This book would make a fantastic gift for someone who might be a little hesitant about cooking or a teen just getting into cooking. It also adds a nice angle to my collection of graphic novels. It lays out every step of the cooking process in cartoon flow charts, leaving no guesswork on preparation. The clear visuals offer a detailed explanation of cooking, all in a snapshot. This is especially helpful when you are in the midst of cooking and you need to look for a step without having time to scan a paragraph of text. The illustrations are also better at capturing the details in recipes that traditional recipes leave out, such as cutting techniques and exact timing of ingredients. Each picture is definitely worth a thousand words! My second favorite part of the book is the philosophy that seems to undergird the book. It promotes individuality and creativity for the reader; it doesn’t put forth a set of rules to follow, but rather, something like a roadmap for the reader to choose different options in the kitchen. As the author writes in the beginning of the book, “The following recipes are not intended as precise culinary blueprints. Instead they are meant to inspire improvisation, experimentation and play in the kitchen.” Picture Cook is one of the smartest cookbooks I have ever seen, and I think you will enjoy it!

Great concept -- didn't realize it was mostly vegetarian
I love the concept of the book -- it really de-mystifies cooking and helps keep me from being intimidated when trying a new dish. I just wish I'd known the book was so heavy on vegetarian dishes. I am not a big meat eater (I rarely eat red meat and cook only chicken, turkey or fish for my family) but I only found two mentions of meat in the entire book.

Innovative and fun!
Picture Cook is a cute, fun way to cook your way through creative breakfasts, meals and snacks. I love the way this book guides you through each recipe, showing you step by step how to build something delicious. A traditional cookbook can feel overwhelming with doctored-up, professionally lit photos paired with page after page of wordy text. Picture Cook is a great entry into the culinary arts that helps the everyday gal feel a bit more like a chef!

My Autistic brain is THRILLED
I went looking for good Christmas gift ideas for me and my fellow disabled friends and came across this book. It is EXCELLENT. Other visual cookbooks I came across looked clinical, not at all modern, and had labels like “for the mentally impaired” in big letters on the cover. Ick! This one, on the other hand, is gorgeous, fresh, modern, and doesn’t feel awkward to pull out in front of other people.Although I can read just fine, I have always been a very visual learner, so having my recipes available as flow charts makes cooking so much simpler -- and more fun! I think this brain is a perfect fit for people who struggle with reading for whatever reason, children, anyone who learns visually, and any whimsical chef who wants a truly original recipe book. Heck, this would even make a stunning coffee table book!

must be able to read
Yes there are pictures but they are also captioned so that you know what the pictures signify. Therefore you'd better be able to read to use this book or have a very good sense of inductive reasoning as the pictures are not that detailed.

Super simple and cute!
I really loved this cookbook. I am new to the world of cooking, and this book is perfect, even for me. It just shows you everything, simplifying the oh-so-complicated kitchen and its skills to the max, making everything look like a breeze.I was a bit saddened to see that there weren't many options or choices with the food, but this cookbook has great recipes for some brand new things you could cook and bake. Most things in this book are healthy, and it's a good book to have lying around. Nothing looks like a project with this book, everything feels fun and easy, so you just never know when you might feel like cooking/baking/making something with this book.Katie Shelly is absolutely adorable, you can tell from the illustrations in this book, and I will definitely purchase whatever else she has in store for us.

Five Stars
Bellissimo, originale, e anche utile per chi odia seguire le ricette in quanto effettivamente molto chiaro.

Isn't this the way we all think?
Simplicity, no words, just the way we all think - in ideas. When a child can understand and perform, it can work for anything. Can I suggest one of these books for building airplanes or computing. Katie, you are special.

The book isn't to buy till now. But have a look inside and look at the homepage of the author and distributor.I guess: The highly innovative and new idea to "draw" a book about cooking concentrating of the visual aspect is worth to give five stars. I'll write more as soon as holding the book in my hands Picture Cook: See. Make. EatPicture Cook: See. Make. Eat

Not suitable for a child, but quirky and fun.
I bought this for a child and it’s certainly not suitable. It’s quirky but not really practical. The line drawings are really difficult to follow.
