Good and reliable data collection, but fragile connecting system and cable.
The Precision Design GP-1 GPS Geotag Adapter does a fine job of providing geo-location data for nature and birder shots I take. The unit itself is small and reasonably well built. My concern is with the cabling system that links the Nikon ten pin connector on my Nikon D800e with the Geotag Adapter seated in the flash shoe on top of the camera. I have found the connection at the 10 min connector twitchy and not reliably seated despite the threaded connector, and the connection at the Geotag Adaptor itself fragile. It's easy to snag that dangling cable while moving about brush and wooded terrain. I broke one adapter when the connection at the Geotag connector itself snapped (which I counted as operator error) and I have ordered and use another of this brand at this point. I find I'm more careful in using it, so it'll last longer but I will try another brand should this second one also fail. In summary: good and reliable data, fragile connecting system and cable.

Unreliable, unstable and frustrating
This GPS adapter for Nikon works great when it works - which is less than half of the time. It takes a long time to acquire the GPS signals and then drops off frequently while in use. It often fails to provide GPS data to the camera. I find that unless I frequently turn it off, then back on, the camera does not receive GPS data from the adapter. This should be a turn on and forget about it unit - but, I have to give it constant attention in order to ensure that at least some of my photos have geo-tags. Recommend this as a 'don't buy'.

Meets expectations, but nothing extraordinary.
Its biggest selling point, of course, is that it costs about 1/6 the price of Nikon's GP-1, for what, as far as I can tell, is an equivalent degree of functionality. I note a few of the previous reviews complain about an issue with the connector sticking out too far on the camera, being vulnerable to damage. This is indeed a significant issue, in my opinion, but the blame belongs to Nikon, and not to the manufacturer of this device. A right-angle connector would significantly mitigate this issue, but there doesn't seem to be any right-angle version of this connector available. Looking at the pictures on Nikon's web site of their GP-1 package, it looks like theirs uses the same straight connector, and would create exactly the same issue. This GPS seems to perform well enough. No obvious quality or performance issues. I don't know what more to say about it.

Inconsistent Performance!
This product, while similar to the Nikon unit, provides accurate GPS position information...when it works. After connecting to the camera, and waiting for a steady green light, it properly geotags photos being taken. Until it stops, for no apparent reason. No obstructions, no trees, nothing that would prevent GPS reception. And all with a steady green light. On the GPS menu page, GPS Position is grayed out, and no position is available. Sometimes, it would reacquire the position, other times, I had to disconnect the unit and reconnect to initiate GPS reception. Of the ninety or so pictures I took today, 34 did not have GPS data, and this with my constant fiddling to make sure it had reception and was working.Overall, I am disappointed with this product and cannot recommend it. It's best feature is that it updates the camera clock to GPS time.

2 yrs later - still working fine! No, make that three years later now...
This device works fine with my Nikon D600. It is a fraction of the price of the Nikon GPS unit and has a newer chip set. I am amazed at how small and light it is. I see the same issues as some other reviewers - the cable projects below the base of the camera so be aware of that. It takes a few minutes for initial satellite acquisition but so do most other GPS devices - I don't consider it excessive. Battery drain is a non issue for me; I always carry two batteries for my camera.UPDATE: I have had this unit nine months now and have pretty much the same opinion of it. I like it. I have a Nikon D810 arriving in a few days and I'm interested in any D800 owners who have experience with this unit. I saw one post by a D800 owner and it was quite negative. Any others? Good or bad, I am interested in your thoughts.Time for another UPDATE - after two years of use, this little device is still working flawlessly - now it is on my Nikon D810. I have had none of the cable problems reported by other users and no problems with battery drainage either. A typical photography day trip goes like this: out the door at 6 am, arrive just north of Cherokee, NC at the western entrance to the Blue ridge parkway 8am. I turn on the GPS and the camera at about 7:30 am it stays on for the rest of the day. I drive along the parkway and stop every couple of miles to take a panorama (up to ten shots stitched together in Lightroom CC). By late afternoon I have normally shot about 200 pictures and usually still have 4 of 5 bars remaining on my EN-EL15 camera battery. No drainage at all. If it were to break tomorrow, I would throw it away and immediately order another - I've EASILY gotten my 40+ bucks worth out it. I'm sorry others have had poor results with their unit; mine has been nearly flawless.THREE YEAR UPDATE - still works like a champ. I just got back from a half day shoot of about 120 pictures and some video. Battery still at four bars and every image is properly tagged with coordinates.

Not perfect but worth the price over the name brand version.
We bought this for our vacation. It worked well for our purpose and the price was worth it.Here are a few things to keep in mind.First, you have to let the GPS sync with the satellites. This should be done outside. Indoor accuracy was spotty once it synced (however this was expected since it relies on GPS technology).Second, it mounted to my Nikon above the built-in flash. This prevented it from popping up. Although I rarely needed a flash, an alternate mount would have been helpful. I tied it to the strap to let it dangle. I don't know if this is ideal, but it was my solution.Lastly, it only lasted 6 months for me. I'm not sure if it got wet during my trip, but it would actually cause my camera to behave erratically. This was very odd and I contemplated a lower rating, but for the price it will get you through a trip for a fraction of the price.
