Q: Do these have pockets?

They do not have pockets. At least the ones I bought several years ago. Still great pj's. Still have them and look new.

Q: The person i'd like to get this for is 5'10 280/300lbs. would the xl be too small for him

I'm 5'10. 200 lbs. I got an XL. I think it fit in some areas and other areas not so much. I think these are bulky and just don't fit right. But that's my opinion. I would say your in between a XL and a double XL.

Q: Can you get them without the dropdown rear?

There is a listing for the same pj's with NO drop seat

Q: how well does the drop seat work?

It works very well for only being fastened with Velcro. Just make sure when you go to sit down it is at your feet and not on the seat.
