The Triplets of Belleville

One of my favorite animated films
A great film. Very entertaining. Not much talking in the film, so you really don’t need subtitles

Simply enchanting!
The triplets of Bellevue is absolutely a classic and recommended for anyone from the age of four through 94. The animation is imaginative and so much fun to watch and the music is lively and toe tapping, as well. My daughter and I watched it together countless times when she was young and I’m sure we would enjoy it even now, 25 years later.

Ribbiting! Frog Legs Anyone? Peculiar! Unique! Ingenious!
This is an animated story of love, danger, and survival. My daughter recommended this movie to me and I ended up purchasing it on Prime Video. I'm so glad that I did. I've watched this amazing animated film several times and each time I find something wonderfully new and exciting about it. The animation is phenomenal. I loved the storyline even with all its peculiarities. The grandmother's love for her grandson, (a cyclist and who happened to be kidnapped by the French Mafia), was endearing and she never gave up her pursuit in finding him. The kind and hospitable Triplets of Bellville were a "trip" to be sure and all three sisters lived in an upstairs flat; and as they are leading the grandmother and the dog to their upstairs apartment, they pass by some other tenants in the hallway—two hookers and a guy who was most likely their pimp, meanwhile roaches are scurrying all over the place. They eventually walk by a filthy bathroom, open door and all! Ugh! LOL! Call the landlord or rather slumlord!Imagine this dear, old woman and her faithful dog paddling along in a rented paddle boat across the ocean to rescue her grandson in Bellville. The paddle boat had to be back in 20 minutes. Yeah, right! By the way, I finally realized why the dog barked at the trains passing by--incessantly, that is! The villains in the square suits cracked me up. I loved how the face of the main villain was transformed by the artist into a burger which segued into another scene. Ingenious! There was so much about this film I found remarkable--and could go on and on, but then I'd be giving out too much info. I absolutely loved this film and highly recommend it. I just have a deep appreciation for quality, intricate artwork and all that it entails. The colors were beautiful! Outstanding production. Bravo to all concerned!

really nice family movie, just not~exactly~for the yuguns
ToB is a film that pays respects to the classics in many ways. These respects are given not only through the story and music but a good majority of it to the animation style(s). The beginning scene(taking place in the 1930s on a television) is done entirely in the noodle armed "Felix the Cat" style that was widely used at the time. Once it cuts to Grandma Sota and her grandson, the designs take a turn for the more detailed caricatures you see on the cover. Each exaggeration is meant to fit each character's personality as well as their role in the story and it is executed beautifully. The music pays homage to the jazz scene in 1930s with jazz improvisation and gypsy jazz(including many animated "cameos" from famous musicians at the time XD). The title song "Belleville Rendezvous" can feel overdone after repeats during the course of the movie but to the credit of the filmmakers they do mix it up by making it a different tune evert time the song does role around. Also, the movie is almost entirely lacking in narrative which is great to me because I believe subtlety for the most part makes a film stronger but it may be a turn-off to some who are more appreciative of the art of dialogue than I. My only grip with the English version is that a good majority of the little narration there is stays in French. If they going to go to the trouble of making an "English" dub than I think it stands to reason that more than 2 out of 15 of those lines should be dubbed. Otherwise could I at least get the option of having subtitles! As for the story...I think there is more to the PG-13 rating than the (animated) Josephine Baker boob clip(which in my personal opinion is silly but oh well). The movie does contain some gritty drama and dark humor that isn't (in my opinion) suitable for kids under the tweenage years. A couple of examples include a dead pig in a butcher's window shop being tied to a mechanical bike as an ad for the Tour de France and a man getting shot in the head off screen...& dying...this ain't the Looney Tunes verse. But overall it is about the lengths one will go to rescue a family member even if the odds are stacked against them very high!At the end of the day, I do consider this a family movie (just for the slightly older crowd) and I would also suggest it to someone looking for a unique animated film. I enjoyed it and hope you will too! :)

SUPERBE!! A Masterpiece!! As a cyclist and culture lover I am fascinated by this!
This movie is absolutely brilliant! A cultural masterpiece! After watching and laughing in wonderment at this movie, give it a great review and then to add to the laughter, go ahead and read the piddly few 1-star reviews it was given by a few idiots that didn't understand what they were watching (like the fool that was looking for subtitles - there's basically no dialogue except some incidental stuff like when they have a radio in the background and such)! Ha! To those reviewers I say, go hang out at Walmart and satisfy yourself watching some stupid commercialized Disney trash that you WILL understand. There's more to life than Disney!Everyone, do yourself a favor and BUY this great animation and watch it over and over because you see and understand new things in it every time you watch it. Now I just want to watch the director's other films like The Illusionist.

Simply the best - one of the oldest cartoons but wonderful
Early cartoon film style that would have been ahead of its time when made. - First introduced tho this film years ago 2006 - Tracing a Grandmother and her grandson who has lost his parents, in their dysfunctional family life and that of their dog - Eventually the depressed little lad got a puppy and a bike - The puppy took on all the neurosis of the family and the bike took him to the tour de france - What an adventure - Watch this again and again - so odd, so very cleaver.

Odd, but wonderful!
A slightly strange animated film with very eccentric characters (well, it is French, but there is so little dialogue, that no one should have any difficulty following the odd-ball plot!). Excellent animation -no expense spared! I love Disney & Pixar, and I love this film, too. Possibly, too odd for children, but adults with a broad taste will, at least, like it! Take a chance, it might be the best animated film that you've seen in years.

I don't know how to describe the Triplets of Belleville other than to say that it's one of my favourite films of all time.It is probably the best animated film I have ever seen.It is a visual storytelling masterpiece without any dialogue.Loved the French humour.

Great rainy day viewing
4 WORDS!!!!Simply Brilliant. Buy this. The story of a little boy who eventually gets a bicycle from his mother and can't stop playing with it. This then leads to him riding in the Tour De France where he and some other riders are kidnapped and taken to America. His mother tracks him down and rescues him and they all live happily ever after.Another good thing about this film is that you are not staring at the subtitles all the time. There isn't any as the story is understandable without the need for them. This is a cartoon with exceptionally good animation considering it is not computerised animation but rather paper drawings. You'll have a good time watching this.

Probably the best cartoon ever made!
This is the kind of cartoon that could only have been made by the French. Brilliantly witty and yet full of pathos. The music thoughout is extraordinary thanks to Benoit Charest (and Mozart). The Kyrie from Mozart's Grand Mass in Cm accompanying the 'pedalo in stormy seas' scene is inspired, but is typical of the quality and care with which this masterpiece has been put together. I have watched it 100 times and will never tire of it! In the same league as 'Mr Bird saves the World' another extraordinary French cartoon which probably hasn't made it onto DVD? I would be first in line.Check out the clips on YouTube and then buy it!
