You are able to adjust both projection and screen light levels via button. You can turn off.

Is the time projected in an orientation which is readable while laying down (left to right) looking at the ceiling?

Yes. It rotates by 90 degree increments so that it can always be read, but depending on the angle of the clock (towards the bed), it might be a wee bit rotated. Not a problem though.

Plug into an outlet or battery only?

It comes with an AC adapter. On AC power the projector and display stay on continuously. If operated on battery power only, the projector and main display backlight shut off after a few seconds + the USB charging port disabled
