A great 3rd hand
Great for holding flimsy cassette or vhs tape while making repairs. Be careful not to breath on the tape to prevent it curling or moving. I find scotch tape works effectively and more easily than the tapes supplied with the unit. The groves on the sides make it easy to razor trim the tape to size so it's not protruding beyond the width of the tape. You should tape the side which does not come in contact with the recording heads, most always at the rear closest to the reels and not the front. There are some directions on the rear of the package card, but not too difficult to figure it out.

It works
One of the few options for repairing VHS cassettes.

It did what I needed to do
It seems that the sellers of this product have not given us much info on what is included and I read many reviews where buyers seemed confused. But, after reading the reviews I was better able to use this product; I also watched a YouTube video by James Lester Baldwin "VHS Video Cassette and Tape Repair." What you get is 4 rolls - a white roll of splicing tape (literally the only reason I bought this product), a roll of clear non-adhesive tape which appears to be what you would use as a leader at the beginning of the tape (which is what tells the machine to stop rewinding), a clear red non-adhesive tape and a very narrow roll of white tape which people seem to have confused with a "gear" (I have no idea what these are for but people who work with film probably know). Because I used the technique described in the video I mentioned, I did not even need the block with clamps so I honestly don't know whether it would have been helpful, but I did use the razor that was included and found that useful for cutting the tape where it got mangled in my VCR. I think this product was well worth the price and I suggest that if you need to know how to use it do a search on Google or Youtube and there are many thoughtful people who have posted tutorials. With this splicing tape I was able to save a video of my daughter from 1988, which I am now converting over to digital.

Fussy
Splicing block works OK. Nice that it has storage space for the razor blade. One of the spring clamps that hold the tape did not lock down. The molded hinge-pin would not seat properly in the block(cheap plastic). I had to manually hold the one clamp down with a spare finger on my "3rd" hand to make it all work. Still, this was way better than all of the videos of people holding the tape between their fingers and cutting it with scissors. It would have been nice to include directions on which side of the video tape to place the splicing tape on. I don't do this regularly enough to ever remember.

Works well
I wanted a splicer for quarter inch but they were very expensive. This was the next best thing and reasonably priced. It worked just fine.

Save your money just use scotch tape.
No actual instructions on how to use it.
