Clear Leadership: Sustaining Real Collaboration and Partnership at Work

So I think I actually have been reading the older publication of this book that a friend lent me, but I bought the kindle version so I could have it on hand all the time. This book has been life changing for me. I've always been terrible at figuring out my emotions, and I know I ignored them most of my life until it became a problem and I started having anxiety issues out of the blue.This book really helped clarify everything I'd been learning about myself and others. I'd been introduced to the idea of relational 'boundaries' in other books before, but without the emotional intelligence to inform your decisions, boundaries (or rules) are just not enough. This book is really foundational and kind of puts the rest of the books on boundaries to shame, even though it's not even advertised as a book on boundaries.I am now so aware of when I am making up 'stories' about people to fill in the gaps of my understanding of them. Just the first 60 pages or so were all I needed to do a 180 at work and with some of my closest friends. I found I'd been mislabeling people for years!! I've been telling eveyone about this book it's so good!!

Not only is this book an easy read, but it covers skill sets that are often ignored by developing leaders. The exercises and activities looked so useful and were so clearly explained that I brought them into my work group and decided to try them out as soon as I had finished the book. And indeed, the activities worked like magic. We explored several of the exercises together as a group. Our biggest achievement from that was normalizing and integrating our emotions into our everyday discussions. That is HUGE. I am proud to say that we now have solidly institutionalized the emotional awareness practices taught in this book, which has been the springboard for us to become a high-performing team. Truly a breakthrough book for those open-minded enough and secure enough to tread in unexamined areas, and so imminently applicable so that a motivated leader or OD professional can, as I did, take it and run with it and see significant improvements.

I have tried to attack the beast of organizational learning the hard way, i.e. reading books from authors like Chris Argyris. I am so glad I came upon this book.Highly practical, though not too academic, solidly researched this book is a pleasure to read.Examples and case stories make this book an easy read.To apply it, that's another story. unfortunately, it appears to be quite difficult to find a certified trainer for clear leadership. But that's not a problem of the book.The exercises are also very useful.I highly recommend this book.

For leaders to navigate the complexity of today’s world, it is essential they know themselves inside out. A key part of this is understanding how to ensure their interactions are clear, without the sense making that creates so much difficulty in work relationships. I can’t recommend Gervase’s book highly enough.

I studied under Dr. Bushe for my MBA some years ago, and found his understanding and work to be extremely valuable in helping me work in organizations with various teams in different roles. I received an early version of Clear Leadership, and found much that was practical in my day-to-day work. So, it was a real pleasure to find he updated the earlier version, and I'm finding that revisiting Dr. Bushe's ideas to be very helpful, and extremely relevant.

Bushe's first edition of Clear Leadership caught our attention as he explored the various components of effective leadership. I wondered what the business case was for investing in a "remake.' I am pleased that this update is a for-real 'new and improved' version that reflects his further thinking, practice, and evolution of the field. A winner, once again.

Very good synthesis and very usable material for clear conversations and relationships. Gervase is a masterful workshop leader and excellent thinker with a sense of lightness. This work brings personal growth and change into leadership development with elegance.

This book explains how people make up stories and then act on them without checking them out. It has tools to help you get clear and to help you be clear with others, improving relationships and partnerships. HIGHLY recommended for anyone, not just for business.
