Cheetah Cubs (Penguin Young Readers, Level 3)

My son check this book out from the library at school and fell in love with it. It was a must-have, so I ordered it. I recommend this for any kindergarten to second grade.

My 6 year old loves this book. She was just barely ready for a level 2 reader...was scared to try one...and did great with this book as her first level 2. It was engaging, informative, and nicely illustrated. She is now obsessed with Cheetahs as a consequence of reading it multiple times to herself, to her sister, late at night when she wakes up...I tried this also as the first Penguin (All Aboard...Reader) to see if we like them as much as the DK and National Geographic readers. I have to say that this was better than I expected and that being written as a story without all of the pop ups and little side note boxes...this was a much nicer format for a distractable child and made the flow of information much more seamless. We'll buy more of this series of readers for this reason. We like the photographs in the other series mentioned...maybe more than the illustrations in this book, and as for information, it did not exceed the National Geographic but flowed better. The levels in this series seem less difficult than the DK Readers...just as a comparison. A level 2 here might be a level 1 in the DK Readers.Very worthwhile reader...overall, I'd take it over the comparable National Geographic one.

I was searching for a book that is educational and utilizes real artwork (not something like CGI cartoon characters) and this one is perfect. I love the cheetah art, and they're also very cute. It is informative but doesn't have anything that might scare a young child unless the idea of an obligate carnivore in itself bothers them. The hunting scenes are tastefully censored ... no blood ... mother cheetah carrying back a scrap of prey is just a furry oval, and the whole litter survives to adulthood.

Our granddaughter enjoyed reading her new Cheetah Cubs book. Perfect for her birthday.
