Network Security Bible

Slightly outdated but still a good read!
A well-written synopsis of many types of security topics ranging from web security, to network security, to operating systems security, as well as security management. Eric does a great job of introducing how many types of information systems fundamentally work, discusses security concerns with those systems, and presents solutions to those risks. I greatly appreciated Eric's practical knowledge which stands in contrast to the many theoretical based security textbooks out there. The book is starting to show its age as is common in the ever-changing field of security, but still serves as a great primer.

Initial thoughts
I am using this book for a class. The title and table of contents looked exciting on the book, but I have found that many of the chapters contain information that is rather old. My environment is a mixed shop of linux, windows, and mac systems. I found the author's notations that IE is the only really prevalent browser out there to be incorrect and out of date. His thought that since IE is prevalent that browser security issues affecting IE affect all the other browsers (which he alludes is Netscape Navigator). The writing style of the book - although seems spread out is very dry in the initial 10 chapters. Some great interspersing of real world examples would have made the book more engaging.

Outdated
I bought this book in preparation the GIAC GSEC. The info is good but very outdated, I ended up not using it during the test.

Network Security Kindle Version
Was better off buying Network Security Paperback, because the "location progress" is less friendlier than "page viewing" making chapter or page selection a hassle since page viewing is way more convenient than viewing a fraction of a page at a time. The kicker was the Paperback version was $35.88 vice the kindle version was $32.99, which for an epub format wasn't even worth the decision since Kindle is so unfriendly when it comes to viewing the content. Having to buy a Kindle reader to view pages is even less appealing, making the purchase of this book on Kindle a very whack decision. I will now refrain from buying Kindle ebooks and consider paperback versions regardless of the shipping cost and taxes.

Picked it up for Sec+ now, GSEC later
This was a decent book on security. I actually picked this book up to provide additional material for the Security+ (which was very easy by the way) and to provide something to help me self study for GSEC in the coming months. I found this book to be very useful for both cert and non cert study. It can be a little dry at times but that is to be expected.

Good source
From what I've read so far, it seems pretty cut and dry, not a lot of fluff, but detail instead, which pleases me. LOL.It's a good source.

All in one almost
Extremely well structured book. A reference anyone should have indeed if you are a honnete homme with some interest in your times. Of course, professionals and want-to-be will find good data and explanation. The technological aspects could start earlier in the book. But frankly this is not easy to make such a book and the outcome is a masterpiece.

Great for GSEC exam preparation
A great book covering a wide range of cyber security topics. As well as the SANS 401 course material, I studied this book for my GIAC GSEC exam, and passed with a 97% score. I'd recommend this to anyone studying for their GSEC and other entry level Cyber Security courses.
