A Little Greek Reader

Wide variety of texts, cleverly grouped
A big selection of good and interesting Ancient Greek texts and a great variety of authors and genres (over 20 authors!). If you have at least beginner Ancient Greek, this will take you to the next level. Best for intermediate. Despite the emphasis on classroom use, I find it is also good and useful for anyone who wants to keep up or develop their Greek on their own.As the reviewer below points out the texts are grouped by grammatical principles. That turns out to be quite interesting, and quite helpful, with texts grouped according to categories such as the use of cases or impersonal verbs.

excellent selection of readings (grouped by grammatical principles)
this is an unusual collection of excellent readings grouped, however, on grammatical principles, i.e. NOT on historical period or type of literature.so the groupings are based on common problems of, for example, case or tense. this may be more clever than desirable for some readers, but the readings themselves are diverse and interesting. and the unusual groupiings may solve some grammatical problems for readers more advanced than myself.

A very eclectic selection of texts. Not, however, for the beginner. Designed to accompany a grammar textbook rather than replace it.

Useful for learners
This is really useful if you are learning Greek as the readings are broken up according to linguistic points so you can focus in on specific issues.

Not really for beginners or self-learners
I bought this as a self-learner to read more Greek while revising the grammar I have already learnt. To be frank, I find it a rather strange volume, the grammar is indeed fairly basic (and as such useful as far as it goes), but I find the readings far more difficult than the grammar so the two aspects of the book are at odds with each other. Even finding the words one does not know (unfortunately the vast majority) in the word list at the back is not very easy. The big problem for a self-learner is the lack of a key. To be sure one can usually find the text on the Perseus website so this is not an insurmountable problem but it is tedious to have look up Perseus nearly every time. I do think the readings are very good, just too difficult for the relative beginner whereas the rather sketchy grammar notes are about right. I cannot understand how this book would be used, perhaps a teacher is necessary. I will carry on using this book with the help of Perseus, but it has already given my self-confidence a knock.

Worth it
Like all the other reviews say— a helpful tool. Great compliment to Athenaze or another first year course.
