Traditional Sensor Controlled Outdoor Lantern Wall Light Fitting in Matt Black by Happy Homewares

The traditional sensor-controlled outdoor lantern which has done duty outside our front door for about the last 30 years had suffered failure of the inbuilt sensor, so I needed to replace it. We did not consider the modern LED outdoor light fittings suitably attractive for fitment there, so this lantern was selected.The Amazon listing for this lantern states: “Requires 1 x maximum 60watt E27 incandescent bulb (not included). Low energy and LED bulbs may be used if desired.” Initially I tried an E27 LED bulb with a 60W incandescent-equivalent light output but found it unsatisfactory in terms of light output. The limit of 60W for an incandescent bulb would, of course, have been heat output, so I considered it entirely safe to fit a 13W LED bulb with equivalent light output as a 100W incandescent bulb. That was satisfactory.I awarded a score of only 3 stars for brightness based on the light output provided by a 60W incandescent bulb, but as you know that deficiency has been overcome.The matt black die-cast aluminium frame of the lantern has a 5 year guarantee against corrosion (excluding coastal areas) but, although the old lantern, also aluminium, did eventually suffer some corrosion, it was, as I stated earlier, the failure of the motion detection unit that ‘killed’ it. There was no mention of how long problems other than corrosion were guaranteed to remain absent! But hopefully all will last a great deal longer than 5 years.

I am not a qualified electrician. I did not need to be as the instructions are very straightforward.Set up during daylight hours, I had to wait till it was dark to test and adjust the settings.My Ring Doorbell is perfectly assisted by the light.This item is perfect for my needs.

Installation was a doddle but, at first for a few hours overnight it would stay on like a dusk till dawn light 🤔 For some reason by the 2nd night it now works perfectly as a sensor light, thankfully. One downside is the glass is not pre-installed & hopefully it stays watertight... So far, after about 3wks it's still working perfectly & no water from all the rain we've had, has got inside 😀

Unit was not as robust as it looked in the photograph and needed assembly prior to instsllation. Is not watertight as the galss panels fit loosely. Still looks good snd workd.

Looking the same as the one it replaced, this model is an excellent replacement after the previous one's PIR external white hood disintegrated due to the effects of UV rays during the past 25 years.

Easy enough to install and does its job. Only bad thing is the motion detection.I set up motion detectors all the time with great results but this, even on its lowest range and sensitivity setting picks up passers by several metres away. Also passing cars and trucks.Makes us think theres someone at the front door all the time
