My dvd plays but my vhs does not play i do not have the operating instructions help

I have neither the player nor the instructions, but I think you have to push the VHS button on your remote or on the player. I don't believe the machine automatically does that for you. The VHS is probably running, but if your player is in the "DVD mode" you won't see the VHS picture. Hope this helps.

It seems like it you hook the DVD player to your computer, you could record the VHS movie then copy to a DVD.

can you record on vcr

No. All I can do is record my old VCR tapes onto DVDs, but that's only if they aren't copyrighted. I cannot record from the TV anymore.
