Q: can the shaft be modified with an extension to give it more length?

Why not?! Remove the handle, find a suitably sized/gauge steel or aluminum thick-wall round tube that will fit snugly over the full length of the existing shaft at the desired length. Screw/bolt/rivet the two together. If needed run a slit up one side to get it tighter. Enjoy the added length and discover that you can now apply sufficient additional force to easily bend and probably break the tines off. ;-)

No. The shaft is one piece of steel.

Q: Does it get too hot to handle in the sun?

This is the strongest spading fork on the market. Although it has a black finish, I don't find that the tool gets particularly hot, though I get plenty hot and sweaty while using it vigorously. The only minus is that the handle is a bit short and requires a little more bending over to work it.
