Painting Light With Colored Pencil

Good for Still Lifes and Technique
"Painting Light in Colored Pencil" is a wonderful book if you are interested in technique applied to still life compositions. She does a great job of moving reader through process of the creation of a "mood" that is related to light. Most of her examples involve fruit, flowers, and ceramics. If this is your interest, you will find the book helpful. If you are interested in landscapes or more unorthodox subjects I believe you will feel the book is too limiting. The first 31 of 126 pages is dedicted to materials, photography, and composition. For a beginning colored pencil artist this may be very helpful section. For advanced artists, you will probably skip over this section. I liked the book since it contains interesting techniques and a good message -paint what you like (what inspires you) and have fun at it.

Beautiful Still LIfe gallery
When I first got the book truthfully I wasn't that impressed. But months later I got it out again, and the second time through I guess I understood what she was trying to do. This is a book I will refer to time and again. If your aim is to create a beautiful realistic still life, this book is a must!!!

Adaptable techniques
This isn't a how-to-use-colored-pencils primer. It offers exactly what the title promises. There's plenty of instruction to keep one busy, but as usual, I wish there were more. I am surprised by how few colors Ms Baird uses to achieve her remarkable effects. Painterly or not, these are excellent techniques to learn. And regardless of one's personal artistic style, the drawings in this book are well worthy of the admiration Ms Baird's work receives.

An Excellent Colored Pencil Resource
I not only found this book beautiful to look at, it is also full of wonderful tips for both the beginner and more experienced colored pencil artist. This is an older publication, published in 2005, but the author's tips and methods are timeless and still applicable to colored pencil techniques of today. I found the chapter on Inspiration, Composition & Lighting particularly helpful. The author provides good information on how to create a good composition and how to light your subjects in order to create drama in your drawings. You can follow along with the author's step-by-step demonstrations to learn how to create paintings that glow.

great book
Scanned over and like this book no exercizes or anything but it seems easy and straight forward. So far I like it better than the books by Garry. What gets me all the books only reference Prismas and other hi dollar pencils. So I broke down today and bought some. The Authers should get a % from prisma, etc.lol Also hpe I don't get in trouble from hubby.

One of the best color pencil books available
Fabulous book. I am a beginner with color pencils. The author gives not only examples of objects she has completed, but also techniques and colors used to achieve that piece. Highly recommend both this and "The Color Pencil Bible.". For me, the two books are complementary. Where one is a bit light in details the other is strong in that area and vice versa. This book doesn't give much info on paper abd various brands of pencils. Other book does give info on that. Highly recommend both books. Between the two I have created some lovely pieces of "photo realism."

Recommended by a well respected botanical illustrator
As a newbie at watercolor now for a year, I wanted to try colored pencil to see if I'd enjoy that.My friend and I attended an international flower arranging show here in Boston and met an artist who makes her living illustrating botanical and sea life books. We signed up for a 3hr workshop with her and I was hooked! She highly recommended this book and showed us her dog-eared copy. I purchased 2 copies and now my friend and I can begin drawing with our new medium.

Excellent book
Excellent book that gives good examples, though it does suppose a certain amount of knowledge of how to blend coloured pencil and was written before the advent of Brush & Pencil's Powder Blender ant their titanium white and texture touch up.

Excellent book covering various aspects of injecting light into coloured pencil artwork, mostly still life matter and plant life. Shows basic set up of equipment, including use of light to enhance qualities of subject. Instruction on how to see different colours within a subject according to how light falls on it. Many examples, step-by-step with different backgrounds and atmospheres. Inspirational.
