Is Xbox Live the same as Xbox Gold? And am I correct to say you need the Gold to buy games for Xbox ONE? Please help I'm Old

Xbox live is the online platform for Xbox one and Xbox 360 and there is both a free subscription without multiplayer and 4 free games a month and the gold one is the one that includes multiplayer and 4 games per month.

Do you need just one card per household or does each child need their own card?

If they are all using one console then you only need one. Just make sure whomever had the gold subscription has that Xbox set as 'Home.'

Does this also give you unlimited music and movies from Xbox?

no it doesn't it gives you radio with advertisement, and the movies you have to buy them, every now and then they give you free movies to rent, sometimes free shows to own, and you get 2 games a month, this month they gave 3.

My grandsonn wants this for Christmas. Does the 12 months start when purchased or activated?

The 12 months starts when activated not when purchased.
