This is a great set of dishes. Porcelain is the perfect material for everyday dishes, I don’t know why so many people seem to prefer stoneware. Porcelain is lighter and thinner than stoneware, yet also stronger and more impervious to chips or breaks when dropped. And, my favorite thing about porcelain: it doesn’t get as hot in the microwave. Stoneware always seems to steal the heat in the microwave, getting blazing hot while the food stays cold. Porcelain, in contrast, only gets a little warm while the food gets hot! I did test this particular set in the microwave and yes, it performed as expected for porcelain. The food got hot quickly, and the only part of the plate that got warm was the area under the food. These also were fine in the dishwasher. The set comes with salt and pepper shakers, which seems delightfully old fashioned (even though I don’t need them). I also love that this set comes with both types of bowls: low wide dinner bowls for pasta and globe-like bowls for cereal and ice cream. The only negative is that the dinner bowls are not as big as described. The product description/photos and the box itself says the dinner bowls are 9” wide. Instead, they are 8” wide, the exact same width as the salad plates. It led to me momentarily thinking when I unpacked the dishes that I had somehow gotten zero dinner bowls and 8 salad plates, as they were packed together and are the same size. It’s a bummer because (a) pasta bowls should just be bigger, and also (b) if you want to stack the dishes per place setting for a dramatic table arrangement, these won’t make as graceful a stack. It’s not a fatal negative, however, and I still prefer this set over any stoneware set. I do wish they had designed a more elegant logo for the reverse side of each dish, or at least smaller.
