Be Prepared - 86 Reasons to Stock Your Vehicle
We take hand tools seriously at the Daniel Patrick Workshop, and we treat them right. We usually purchase from the major brands - in general, their products are a shade better, and getting a replacement or having a tool serviced is a tad easier. But that doesn't mean off-brand tools are always poor quality or don't serve a purpose for us. Once a year I rummage through our cars and truck and make sure each vehicle has a good set of basic tools. My goal is simple - if we encounter a problem on the road that needs a tool, we can usually find one that will work right there in the vehicle. The Mulwark 86-piece set landed at exactly the right time for that annual audit. โโโ Open the case and you're looking at a well-organized spread of metric and SAE nut drivers, impact bits, socket adapters, extensions, a universal socket, a wing nut driver, and a quick-change bit holder - all sitting in a bright yellow organizer with labeled compartments. The bits are forged from Cr-V and S2 steel with an anti-rust coating, and the embedded magnets have a solid grip. For 86 pieces, the coverage across sizes is impressive - both metric and SAE, which matters when you're working on whatever rolls up next to you on the shoulder of the road. Sidebar - S2 vs. Cr-V Steel: S2 steel is harder and handles impact torque well - that's your driver bits. Cr-V (chrome-vanadium) is a bit more flexible, so it absorbs shock without cracking - that's your sockets and nut drivers. A set with both is using the right steel for the right job. โโโ The set got its first real test faster than I expected. I ran into a lad the other day whose car had stopped and he was about to call for a tow. I was in the wife's BMW and offered to help. One quick look and it was obvious there was no power, yet the battery seemed fine. A few minutes later - tracing wires - I found the problem. The fasteners holding a cable to a central power distribution point had loosened and the connection was gone. The nut and washers had long since dropped off somewhere under the hood. I reached for the Mulwark set I had just placed in the Beemer, knowing I had a wide selection to choose from. The magnetic grip held the replacement fastener steady while I worked in a tight space under the hood - no fumbling, no dropping hardware into the engine bay. I tightened up a number of other connections while I was in there - where there's smoke, there's fire - and had the lad smiling and driving away a few minutes later. Pro Tip: If your shop is like mine, you always have a can full of every type of fastener in desperate need of a sort. A while back I decided to embrace the horror - I filled up a couple of smaller containers with the miscellaneous parts and put them with the tools in our vehicles. Now each car and truck has a small but handy parts selection available alongside the tool kit. You'd be surprised how often a handful of random fasteners saves the day. โโโ This set isn't trying to replace your premium shop tools, and it doesn't need to. What it does is put a comprehensive, well-organized selection of drivers and bits within arm's reach when you're away from the bench. The magnetic grip is genuinely useful for roadside work where you can't afford to drop a fastener into the abyss of an engine compartment. The sizes are clearly labeled in the case, and finding the right one is quick even when you're working in less than ideal conditions. โโโ โ Pros Excellent size coverage - both metric and SAE in one compact case Magnetic grip holds fasteners well, especially useful in tight or overhead spaces S2 and Cr-V steel is the right material for the right application Well-organized case with clearly labeled compartments Perfect "be prepared" kit for vehicle tool stashes Earned its keep on its very first real-world outing โ Cons Clear plastic case is more retail shelf appeal than pro tool aesthetic - an opaque case would look and feel more serious ๐ Verdict Be prepared - and a solid toolset like this Mulwark is just what the doctor ordered. โญโญโญโญโญ 5 out of 5 stars
