"E" is for Evidence: A Kinsey Millhone Mystery

A page turner
I love Grafton's novels. Suspenseful and humorous, as well as thought provoking. As Kinsey says, humans really are terrible to each other.

An Entertaining, Fast Read
In her 5th book featuring Kinsey Millhone the character is well developed. The reader can feel a kinship toward her. This book has her personal life in the forefront a great deal. It's the Holiday Season & she's in a less than stellar social position. New Year's Eve is literally a bust.As if she isn't in a bad enough personal state, Ms. Milllhone's ex comes calling on her as well. To say he's a loser would be kind. There's a little surprise waiting for her on his end as well. I found the main plot in this novel becomes a bit weak & convoluted. The book strays away from it's main plot. It's refreshing that the main character is not some super human sleuth, but just a normal down to earth person. She goes through a great deal of boredom chasing the truth in her PI role. I also find Ms. Grafton quite talented in her use of metaphors & in her Southern California descriptions.I think one reason Sue Grafton has been so successful with this series is she was savvy enough to create a "Normal" character in Kinsey Millhone. One most readers can identify with in one way or the other.

She counted on us all knowing the alphabet.
Make no mistake about it. These books (this series) were meant to be read in order. Having just finished reading Agatha Christie, Ross MacDonald, Dorothy Sayers, I wondered in the beginning how much it mattered if I read the Kinsey Millhone series in order or not. Most series don't matter as there is rarely any continuity in time over the course of 5 or 10 novels. There's some, but mostly not.Well, this series is different. Sue Grafton meant these to be read in order. Don't get me wrong, it's not as if I have any inside information, I'm just telling you what I think based on reading the first 5. They're continuous in time, with recurrent characters coming in and out in time sync from their previous appearances. You'd be doing yourself a disservice to read them out of order.Just start at "A", and continue until you've either finished, or had enough. I plan on reading all of them in order. Fast read, and a lot of excitement. Sue Grafton certainly picked up mantle where previous hard-boiled detective authors left off. I'm very lucky to have stumbled on these so long after they were written.

My favorite so far
I’m reading the alphabet series in order from A to Z. Many years ago I had read a few of Grafton’s novels, but not in order, as my choices were based on availability at my library. I enjoy her dry sense of humor and find myself frequently laughing out loud while reading! If you enjoy detective stories and like to try to solve them yourself (as I do) you’ll definitely enjoy this series. I couldn’t figure this one out and found it to be the best so far. On to F!

I can see why Grafton is so popular!
I am fairly new to the Sue Grafton series. Most people started reading about this character years ago, so it's a little strange to be reading about a female private eye in the 80s, when no one had cell phones or computers, etc. But the main character, written in the first person, is very engaging and the stories are good, basic mysteries, so what's not to like? They're quick, easy to read, entertainment for those of us who love a good mystery! I'm eager to get on with the rest of Grafton's alphabet.

A simple read as expected
This is the fifth one in the series and it was exciting and simple like the others. A read that allows me to be entertained without to much arduous concentration.

Kinsey Millhone
Kinsey is assigned a fire investigation by the claims manager at California Fidelity Insurance. When she is accused of wrongdoing by the claims managers boss she starts investigating on her own. What she discovers about who is resposible makes for a great story. Really kept my attention.

Must read mystery series
What can you say about Sue Grafton other than she is a great mystery writer. Kinsey Milhone is an ex-cop and has her own detective agency and never much of a sex life if that what your looking for, go elsewhere. This is a traditional gumshoe story with action and danger to our heroine. After some spotty success writing books, Grafton changed to writing screenplays for TV and movies. With the success of her first alphabet series book ' A is for Alibi' in 1982 it has continued to date. I first discovered her books when I came across G is for Gumshoe (pub 1990) in a recycle center in 2000, I proceeded to local bookstores and Amazon to acquire all of this series up until the current at the time 'O is For Outlaw'. It's always great when you come across a great series in progress as it's a joy just reading book after book from a great writer. Much like 'binge watching TV series on Netflix nowadays. Only problem with an ongoing series is waiting for the next book. Grafton has done only a couple of yearly books and mostly every other year since 'P is for Peril' in 2001. It is now up to just plain 'X' in 2015 and will end with 'Z is for Zero'. I'm hoping she has Y & Z completed as she is 75 now and I'm 70 and don't want to miss the conclusion of this great series.

Typical Sue Grafton narrative
Unpredictable and a page turner. A bit less engrossing compared to the previous four books. But climax was a surprise.

E is for enjoyable
E is an enjoyable, easy read with sufficient plot surprises and twists to hold my attention. Grafton has developed both Kinsey's character and a supporting cast of locals like Henry the landlord, Rosie the Hungarian restaurant owner into a interesting community of support characters whose quirky back stories are interwoven into the plot. The language is clear and concise, the story plausible and the conclusions satisfactory. Kinsey Millhone stories are a great holiday read.

A recommander!!
