If you have a interest in why proper use of our natural resources is necessary, read this book.
An interesting read about how the long leaf pine has influenced the development of the southeast. A thorough review of how the exploration of a tree species has diminished a region of the country and why proper development of our natural resources is necessary.

Great read and very informative!
I've planted several hundred acres of CRP longleaf in the last nine years and now am trying to restore an old longleaf site. A few mature longleaf remain on the site but the pine species is primarily loblolly. The one really nice thing is that the ground cover is mostly wire grass. I look forward to helping on a small scale restore this dynamic ecosystem. Thanks Mr Earley for all the research and great information.

This book is totally worth reading!!!
I just got this book and I am totally fascinated by it. It's like reading a fairy tale about the southeast with magnificent forests and wild life all around. This book has tons of references, science facts, and historical facts. I really love long-leaf pine trees! Lawrence S. Earley writes very well and puts all the words together very well. So this book is easy reading and page turning. This book is must read from anyone from the Southeast. I, as an Alabamian love it.

great book
This book is interesting, well written, and contains information not found in other places. The content is fresh, and remarkably objective for the distressing account of the killing of a forest although it does acknowledge the greed and mismanagement by many of those involved.I highly recommend it for those interested in the history of the south and of the country, in conservation, or reverence for the natural resources of the continent, and in the industries based on trees.

Great read!
I can't look at forests the same way anymore. Fascinating and well written by master storyteller. Typically one only hears of the chestnuts demise.
