The best of its type
A superb product for several reasons.1) Unlike most of its competitors, the power supply is built in, meaning you have one less power brick to deal with.2) The power cord is a standardized version, easily replaceable with an inexpensive substitute if you lose the original.3) The power switch is located on a side surface, not on a top surface, which means there is no danger of turning the device on or off if you place something on top of it, such as another identical hard drive enclosure.4) The USB 3.0 port on the device uses a standard USB A-Type design identical to the familiar dimensions of a USB 2.0 A-Type connector instead of the USB 3.0 Micro B short surface connector, which is one of the worst designs ever made. The USB 3.0 Micro B connection is never secure and falls out easily. USB A-Type connectors do not have this problem. A male to male USB 3.0 A-Type cable is included with the device.5) It would probably be impossible to design a more compact case for a 3.5 inch spinning hard drive with a built-in power supply. The fact that is made of plastic, not aluminum, means you need to handle it with care, however. In addition, there is minimal ventilation, although appears to have a small built-in fan. If the drive got hot, you might consider cooling it with an inexpensive USB powered external fan.6) Icing on the cake would be the inclusion of an “on” indicator light; let’s hope that’s part of any redesign.7) The comprehensive, comprehensible, illustrated instructions included are a bonus. Instructions for devices made overseas, particularly in China, are often poorly translated and impossible to understand; not so with this product.8) Installation is a “snap,” both literally and figuratively; it only takes a minute or two.9) Delightful finishing touches are the inclusion of a small Phillips head screwdriver to install the four screws holding the hard drive to the case base, and one extra screw in case you happen to lose one of the rascals.10) Finally, although it has nothing to do with this product, I’ll mention that I always make a Xerox copy of the label of the hard drive I’ve installed in an enclosure like this and tape it onto the enclosure. That way, I avoid trying to figure out what’s inside later.11) Kudos to Tccmebius for an excellent design that shows a lot of thought.

Compact
There's a certain thrill to snagging a great deal on a USB WD hard drive. But that excitement can quickly turn sour with the dreaded USB WD hardware encryption and losing data on an 8TB drive like that -- been there, electronics failed, lost-everything-on-it done that. That's why I ditched the encryption gamble and embraced the freedom of external hard drive enclosures. Now, whenever I score a USB WD deal, it's just the juicy filling for my trusty enclosure sandwich. No more encryption woes, just pure, unadulterated storage bliss. After years of testing, I've settled on this enclosure because: 1) great value; 2) it is compact, with an integrated power source that eliminates the need for bulky adapters and 3) after years of service, they're still going.

Worked like a charm
I usually don't take the time to write reviews on the stuff I buy on Amazon but I wanted to write this one in case it could be of use to someone who had the same issue I had. I have a 6 year old Lenovo desktop that was running Windows 10 and needless to say I got the blue screen of death- I don't want to boot syndrome. Being a novice I spent $50 on different rescue-emergency boot discs all to no avail, what I really wanted was to retrieve my data and files (pictures, music and documents) off my hard drive, I'll buy a new computer no problem. I then realized that I didn't need to fix the operating system I just needed to pull the hard drive out and find a device that i could put it in to connect it to another PC and this product did just that, within 1-1/2 hours I had safely downloaded all my files to another PC. Not 1 issue, I know there are a lot of reviews that pan it but I think they're using it as a full time running external hard drive and I can see where it may overheat but for my rescue purpose it couldn't have been easier.
