The Righteous Brothers - In Concert

A must for serious RB fans!
In retrospect, this 1983 concert (filmed at The Roxy in Hollywood) by Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield--together forever known as the Righteous Brothers--represents the beginning of a 21-year-journey that would end suddenly, tragically, and much too soon in 2003 when "little Brother" Bobby Hatfield died suddenly while on tour, mere months after having been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, in a cermony during which they gave a stellar performance of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" (the only other quality post-reunion performance footage commercially available). For that reason alone, this DVD is invaluable to Righteous Brothers fans as a keepsake.Despite the presence of several celebrities in the audience, including acclaimed songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the concert itself is a low-key, intimate affair. In their early forties when this show was filmed, Medley and Hatfield have lost none of their vocal power or range, despite their voices having naturally matured and, in Hatfield's case, perhaps deepened half an octave. Not to worry though--he may have had to work harder but he can still reach the high notes in "Unchained Melody". The Brothers fearlessly alter melody lines, and the baritone-to-tenor-to-baritone-and-back-again vocal interplay between the two men is as arousing as ever; they milk that for all it's worth in a steamy rendition of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling". The Brothers joyfully cover their heroes Ray Charles, and Sam and Dave, and take the crowd back to their earliest days with the r'n'b-inspired hits from their underrated pre-Spector era catalog.Between songs, the playful banter between the Brothers, and between Brothers and audience, is relaxed and fun. It's easy to see why they continued to tour almost continuously for the next twenty years, and this show is a reminder of why their fans have remained so loyal. The video and sound quality isn't up to contemporary digital standards, but that should detract only the most spoiled technocentric fan. Otherwise, relax and enjoy.

As far as I know this is the only complete recording of a live concert by the Righteous Brothers
An hour of pure entertainment. All their well known hits and a few others like Soul Man and Brown Eyed Woman, delivered in an intensely personal rendition by Bill Medley. Nonstop music and just enough humor to make you smile and remind you of their complicated but close relationship.Like anything they did, the backup singers and musicians, especially Barry Rillera, who was on fire are top notch. They gave it everything they had. Just wish there were more recorded concerts from this dynamic pair of Blue Eyed Soul singers. Keep an eye out for famous people in the audience, including Bobby's mother.

Better quality than on YouTube
I am a recent Righteous Brothers convert. Yes, I grew up during their times (I'm 73) but except for the big ones, I wasn't really aware of their talent. I am always amazed at how Bobby Hatfield could get his voice to go from "Soul Man" into the sublime "Unchained Melody" . . . or "Young Blood" to Ebb Tide." The quality of this video is superior to what you see on You Tube. It is, however, 80s technology. Good enough for me. Plus, it's filmed in 1983, just when they were initiating their final reiteration of The Righteous Brothers.

Excellent DVD from a live performance at the Roxy in L.A. in 1983 by Bill Medley and the late Bobby Hatfield. They sang all their top 10 hits, both #1's and Medley sang his solo hit"Brown Eyed Woman" and solo'd on the nominal hit"Georgia".Bobby&Bill also did great covers of"Old Time RockRoll" "Soul Man" and"Hold On I'm Coming".An essential must for Righteous Brothers fans or fans of great music. And check out the celebrities in the audience.Wolfman Jack,Connie Stevens[an old flame of Medley]Della Reese,Gloria Loring and some female sit com stars Sally Struthers and others.

Not the best of the Righteous Brothers
I was disappointed in this DVD. Just didn't live up to what I expected, and I love the Righteous Brothers. Just wasn't there for me.

Great Concert, but for Righteous Brothers fans only
This is a great concert with Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield (The Righteous Brothers) in a smaller venue with just the right audience. If you are a fan of The Righteous Brothers, this will be a great show for you - if not, forget this DVD. I loved not only the songs and the band's performances, but Bill's and Bobby's on-stage show and (sometimes) joking around will make this a keeper for your concert collection. Some of their jokes made me laugh out loud... maybe they were rehearsed, but were still well done and got a good chuckle from me. This is the best of 1980s technology, maybe the cameras weren't that good back in the day, but it's a good show on stage. Enjoy it!

Just superb!
The Righteous Brothers blazed very brightly in an era when the likes of The Beatles, Stones, and all the other great names of the sixties were also at their best - watch this DVD and you will understand why. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley had gone their own seperate ways for several years prior to this "special" (and it is in fact the only filmed concert they ever did), the sheer pleasure they get and give from performing their hits is clearly evident. Bobby Hatfield's voice had just begun to deteriorate at the time (which is hardly surprising given the pitch that he had been singing at for years!) nevertheless he still hits the big notes and the quality of the performance does not suffer. They are masterful on stage and held me, for one, spell-bound for the entire performance. The world is a sadder place without Bobby and this DVD is a treasure chest of memories. Blue-eyed soul!
