Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight Folding Pocket Knife, PlainEdge

I want to be honest and mention I just recieved this knife yesterday. This is my initial impressions only and will be updated as time goes on, good or bad. This knife appears to be an amazing piece of engineering. The weight is so little that this rather large knife iterally dissappears once it is clipped onto your pocket. It is thin enough that your hand can easily slip past it to any other contents in your pocket, and the material is not harsh and abrasive. I would imagine that this combination of handle scales and pocket clip would be ideal to keep your pants in good shape (not abrading the material). As an example, I wear polyester hiking pants often, and I have to be careful what knives I carry so as to keep them nice. The handle is extremely grippy and ergonomic (I have medium to large hands), and if the handle weren't enough the jimping and choil provide excellent traction on the blade surface as well. The knife itself is constructed with a combonation of torx bolt and pinned construction (torx on the knife pivot, and bottom of handle where the pocket clip is) and feels very secure. I am sure if it rattled apart Spyderco would replace it, though I just don't see it happening in every day use. Speaking of the construction, a few people here commented on the handle material as being too weak, and that the steel lined manix being so far superior. How sad it is that our poor soldiers have been running around with weakly constructed M4 rifles that are made predomenently from a Fiberglass Reinforced Co-Polomyr nearly identicle to the materials in this knife handle. I personally can attest to the durability of this material, and millions of soldiers can as well. The blade itself locks up as solid as a rock, yet glides effortlessly to open or close. The cutting edge is the sharpest I have ever seen with possible exception to my own Morakniv Classic, though I still believe that this knife has the edge (Ha). As stated, I will update this as I go, but for now, I am very happy to have spent the money on this knife. Also as an aside, the price dropped after I ordered it (the day after I received it) and after contacting Amazon, they are refunding me the difference. All in all, fantastic experience. --------------------UPDATE 8-19-14------------------------- I took this knife on two significant outings over the last few weeks, where it was my main or only blade used. The first was backpacking in the Colorado rockies, where the knife withstood use for everything from fire making, food prep, and significant weather. I also used the knife for whitling wood, and after the trip, the blade was still pristine (no nics in the blade, no stains and razor sharp). This weekend, I went on a four day camping trip with my family at Terryall Resevior. I used this knife exclusively for everything you would use a knife for in the wilderness, including cutting down a few smaller Aspen trees. It handled all tasks perfectly, and to my surprize the knife is still razor sharp (I carved wood for hours on this trip, and have shredded many knife blades attempting to carve half of what I was able to do with this knife). For me, I am completely sold on this knife, and this blade steel. I beat the crap out of it, and it still cuts like new, shows no signs of wear and continues to be my favorite knife. --------------------UPDATE 1-30-15------------------------- After much use I did finally put a chip in the blade. I was carving a walking stick with a bear head on the top. There was a bit of a knot in the wood, and though the knife carved everything fine, once I got home, I realized there was a chip in the knife... This is where the BD1 steel really comes into play. For as sharp as this knife is, and as well as it holds a cutting edge, it is very easy to sharpen and reprofile. The knife is again shaving sharp, and after all that I have put it through it has no blade play at all (without needing to tighten the pivot screw), and is just as solid as day one. This is a fantastic knife that will always be with me when I go back packing.

I already have a G10 Manix 2 with Cruwear steel but wanted a lighter version for carrying in shorts, etc. So I got the all black Manix 2 LW in BD1N steel and it is great. Very light for its size and this one is almost perfect right out of the box. I already have another knife in BD1N and find it to be a great hard use EDC steel. Yes it dulls quicker than many other steels but it doesn't chip easily and it strops back up quickly. And this knife just feels great in the hand. Love it!

This is my 25th folder in my collection. ZT 's. Kershaws. Spyderco. ESEE. Ontario. These are what I stick with. I've had my Spyderco Endura for over 20 years. It's still solid. A true workhorse EDC. I've only recently started to acquire Spyderco knives. I got the Tenacious which I did with some hesitancy as it's made in China. I consider China knives as uncollectable. With that in mind, I'll put this knife through everything I can throw at it. Truth be told, it's a very well made knife. I was impressed. Now which Spyderco do I buy now? They make so many. I was ready to pull the trigger on the Endura 4. I love flat ground blades. At the last minute I see the Manix 2 in blue. As per usual, I search YouTube reviews along with Amazon's and any others I can. I loved the weight. 2.85 ozs? Really? I admit that I didn't care for the blue color at first but at the same time. Practically all my knives are black! This translucent blue was cool. So today I finally get my Manix 2. You know how it is. You simply can't WAIT to see the UPS truck pull up (and hope wifey doesn't see). I open the box up and even though I was expecting light, was really surprised at HOW light it is! You'd think it'd be blade heavy but it's balanced superbly. Just a delight. At first I felt the action was a tad stiff to deploy the blade one handed with ease. After using the Kershaw Blur, you tend to get spoiled. But, Spyderco has thoughtfully placed Torx screws that allow adjustment of the pivot tension. I adjusted both sides by loosening them perhaps 1/8 of a turn. Maybe less. That did it! A very small amount of RemLube on all parts and now it flicks open nicely with one hand. Be careful doing this if you must. Check to see if you've allowed the blade to have any play in it. Mine has zero. The sharpness of this blade wasn't exactly razor like. That's ok though. I like being able to place my own finishing on a knife blade. Sharpened up excellent. I don't need to shave my arm hair to convince me. It's perfect. It was a great day today and I wore my sweat pants. Put this knife in my pocket. Clipped on nice. Love the clip BTW. Even with sweats, the knife felt like it was there. Not many good folders with an almost 3.5 inch blade can do that!! In summary: Surprising weight. Beautiful design/color Great clip. Excellent steel. Easily sharpened. Beautiful lockup and action. Great value overall. Spyderco nailed this one. I'd like too see more colors. Looks like I'm in trouble. I'll be buying a lot more USA made Spyderco knives. Couldn't be happier with this purchase.

As with every Spyderco knife I've owned through the years, I am always impressed with what I get for the money. Their knives always come razor sharp right out of the box. They use excellent materials. Their fit, finish and attention to detail are superb, all the way thru the way the blade deploys, seats in the handle and their awesome pocket clips. About this knife, this one is no exception to what I've come to expect in a Spyderco. This is the first Spyderco I've owned that wasn't made in Seki, Japan. I was actually reluctant at first to go with a non Japanese made Spidey until I watched a nutnfancy video review of this knife on youtube. If you're on the fence, I recommend you go watch that vid. He goes into a very detailed review and makes some excellent points. Now that I've handled and use this knife, I have no reluctance whatsoever for a Spyderco made anywhere in the world. First off, the pics really don't do this knife justice. I know this is purely subjective, but, in my opinion, this is a great looking knife close up and in person. I particularly like the finish on the blade, and while it does scratch, I find that just adds character. For the size blade you get, it really is a light weight package. It rides in my front pocket and I don't really notice the weight on the knife at all. That is impressive to me for the size knife it is, especially when compared to it's G10/milled out liner brethren. Blade deployment is buttery smooth and the tension is perfect for me right out of the box. It's not to hard where a good flick from my thumb or finger won't open it, and it's not too loose where it's ever come open while in my pocket. The lock is stiff and does take some practice to close with one hand, but it is possible. The technique I use is I bury the heel of the handle in the palm heel of my hand and actuate the lock with thumb and forefinger. I don't use the fob type lanyards on any of my knives that I see other people use, but I could see where grasping a lanyard like that could provide enough tension in lieu of my palm heel technique. This knife also feels great in my hand. The texturing and the size/shape of the handle (ergonomics) make this one of my favorite knives in hand. The jimping is typical Spyderco, aggressive, near perfectly executed in my opinion. It allows you to choke up on the blade and gives you really excellent traction, even in slippery conditions you can really lock it in. In my experience with this BD-1 steel, I'm a fan. I've noticed that it holds up to the elements fairly well (no sign of any corrosion) and while not the hardest and toughest blade material, it is really easy to maintain a keen edge. A few passes on my Sharpmaker and strop, and I can usually get it hair popping sharp in a matter of minutes. I typically like to put up all my knives clean and with a light coat of oil, but I feel that I don't have to baby this one as much.

I am very pleased with this knife. - The handle is wonderfully ergonomic, and the texture is grippy without being abrasive to hands or pockets. - The blade is "centered" in the handle when the knife is closed (a mark of manufacturing quality) - Feels like one solid piece when locked open - The edge is hair-shaving sharp - The lock is not "sticky" and disengages smoothly and easily My criticisms: - The edge bevel is not even (one side is slightly steeper). - The seams between the FRCP handle pieces are visible and slightly uneven* * I think this might have some effect on how weather-proof the knife is, as one seam has a slight gap a little narrower than a sheet of paper but still large enough to see and ultimately hold moisture and fine debris like dust and lint. This appears to be the result of a slight imperfection in the handle scale's molding. - - - The rest of this review is an opinion piece about the brand / blade steel. Magnacut steel is the hot new thing and a lot of manufacturers are rushing to get their knives to market, but, honestly, I don't trust them to get the heat treatment right. Heat treatment has a dramatic impact on how the blade performs. Despite this, many larger knife companies (looking at you, Benchmade, CRKT, and Lionsteel) historically have sub-standard "soft" heat treatments, which largely negates the point of using - and paying for - a "super steel" like Magnacut. Spyderco is one of only a handful of companies I trust to do it "right" and independent HRC testing data consistently validates this notion. Basically, if you're buying a knife for the properties of the blade steel, buy Spyderco first (2nd place going to Hogue, Kershaw is 3rd)

I have normally owned cheaper folding knives that I either carry in my car or on my person. Usually cheap stuff that I don't mind losing. I have had the same cheap Chinese knife (bought for $5 at Wal-Mart) for the last 2 years and decided it was time to step into something better. I read most of the reviews on Amazon so I knew what to expect. This thing is extremely light. It has the same weight as a money clip in your pocket. This blade is going to be good for opening letters/packages, cutting rope and other everyday tasks made easier by a sharp blade, and this knife comes shaving sharp so I expect it to take on any other normal task. Being so light it rides terrific in your pants pocket, however, it does have some drawbacks. I have had this thing for a few days now and it is still extremely tight. I didn't want to mess with the torque screw yet that provides tension on the knife rotation, but I may eventually have to. I have opened and closed this blade over 100 times and it is still tight enough that clean action is hard. Meaning I can get it to open but not fully click into position most times. I am sure as I get more used to the action I will get better. I am going to give it another week of use before I mess with the screw. Also the buttons that release tension on the ball bearing take a good amount of pressure to release. I guess that is a good safety feature, but if you were constantly opening and closing it could get annoying. I have a pretty good sized thumb blister from playing with this the last few days. So my main gripe has to do with the tight action and When you first pick this knife up you may wonder if you got taken by Spyderco. That was my first thought, however, at a closer look you can tell this blade has pretty good build quality. Seeing as how the main objective was to create a functional everyday knife with a minimalist approach to weight, they came pretty close to perfection. The handle does have a cheap feel to it, but the fiberglass compound used in this design is the same as the M4/AR15 which is more than durable. This is not the knife I would pick if going backpacking/camping, there are clearly more heavy duty options, but for everyday use, when you don't want your pockets to be weighed down, this thing works. If it wasn't for the tight action I would have given it 5 stars. If it loosens over time and becomes smooth I may come back and update, but for right now it is just too tight for 5 stars.

Only had it 24 hours but I think I like it. Honestly, I'm a CS guy and my first impression of this knife was 'I'll break it for sure'. It is lightweight as the name suggests. It weighed in at 82-83g's, pretty light. It is 3.5mm thick and the blade is just over 3 inches. The blades width is 1.25 inches at the thickest part. I like to fidget so this lock is great for me. The blade locks up nice and folds down smoothly. Not so sure about the value for money. Quality feel to this knife, no wiggle. The belt clip is great, I love the wire clip. I even like the translucent blue.

Super impressed by this knife. One of the sharpest I've owned and a joy to flick open. It's a bit bigger than other blades I've carried but I've learned to appreciate it's size and ergonomics in every day use compared to smaller knives or multitools that are just useful in a pinch but not fun, ergonomic, and easy to use. What's more important is that with it's light weight and wire clip it really does just disappear in your pocket until you need it. You don't feel the size at all. Overall, happy to have joined the Spyderco club. Edit: Review at 2 weeks: Still fairly happy with this knife as an EDC with a few caveats. I've since bought and used a Spyderco sharpmaker to keep it razor sharp. I have noticed that this knife doesn't really stay "paper cutting" sharp after only 2-3 days of minor use - this consists mainly of cutting open Amazon boxes. I could attribute this with my lack of sharpening skills, though I am easily able to get a "hair shaving" edge on this knife with the sharp maker, which isn't difficult to use. I've also since learned a lot more about the various steels used in knives and this one uses CTS-BD1. I've visited many forums and watched many Youtube videos about these steel and want to echo the sentiments that in my experience, CTS-BD1 is easy to sharpen to a very nice, razor edge but it does not hold that edge for an adequate enough amount of time to perform as a regular work knife without frequent sharpening. Saying that, I did recently cut about 10 feet of living room carpet with it and it handled the job well. The only consideration of dropping this down to four stars is the price. As another reviewer commented here, $93 dollars is a premium price for the quality of steel you are getting. For $30-50+ more you can get a knife with steel that is in the upper echelon of "super steels" that all knife makers including Spyderco provide. They stay sharp for days or potentially weeks longer with daily use. Then again the premium price could also be related to being a "lightweight" addition. I've kept this knife at 5 stars because I don't just "like it", I "love it" despite the mentioned caveats.

Hasta ahora, Amazon México se sigue llevando las cinco estrellas tan sólo por el servicio que he recibido: puntualidad, eficiencia y excelente trato; ahora, del artículo propiamente dicho: pagué lo adecuado (no más ni tampoco menos que en los sitios web como KnifeCenter ó KnifeWorks). La caja llegó en buen estado. La pieza posee una calidad excelente. La recomiendo al 100%, incluso, si ya cuentan con la versión regular de G10 y acero S30VN. La hoja viene con un acabado diferente, que no es ése acabado satinado y brillante de otros modelos, pero tampoco es un acabado stonewashed. Resulta agradable a la vista y al tacto. Además, no sólo es ergonómica y de una ligereza extraordinaria, sino que resulta segura y fuerte en las tareas de corte. El filo, por otro lado, llegó casi, casi impecable: supongo que, debido a las condiciones de almacenamiento, la hoja traía una especie de decoloración del lado contrario al Clip, que afectaba precisamente ése lado del filo. Limpie con cuidado el área, que quedó normal arriba en la hoja pero no así en tres áreas muy marcadas en el filo, visibles a contraluz. Fuera de ése detalle todo normal, pues incluso la caja no mostraba humedad ni nada que hiciera pensar en un accidente con agua o algo parecido.

Rasiermesserscharf, gute und sichere Verriegelung über den Ball Bearing Lock, mit drei Unzen ein echtes Leichtgewicht und optisch absolut klasse! Ein Stern Abzug, da das Messer nicht in Originalverpackung ankam, warum auch immer. Tolles Messer! Ich benutze es zu Hause für diverse Schneidaufgaben.

Das Manix2 ist ein mittelgroßer Einhandfolder von Spyderco mit einem Spitzen Preis-Leistungsverhältnis, Gerade in dieser Lightweight Version ohne die Stahl Einlagen eine absolute Empfehlung als EDC. Man sollte sich aber bewusst sein, dass die Verriegelung die hier verwendet wird nichts mit dem ähnlich aussehenden Axis-Lock von Benchmade zu tun hat. Diese hier ist nur bedingt mit einer Hand zu schließen da einfach ein recht großer Kraftaufwand nötig ist für die Entriegelung. Das sollte man evtl. bedenken.
