Flowers of Perversion, Volume 2: The Delirious Cinema of Jesús Franco (Strange Attractor Press)

Monumental Continuation
It has been four years since the first volume but patience persevered. Author Stephen Thrower {this time without Julian Grainger} has completed his monumental study of the films of Director Jess Franco. This time there are some new surprises: The binding is in a beautiful glossy sheen. its volume of pages has increased and the gorgeous color stills are interspersed throughout the text. Thrower starts right where the last volume left off starting with "JULIETTA 69'-1974 and concluding with Franco's last completed work'REVENGE OF THE ALLIGATOR LADIES'-2013. We also have a wonderful interview with Actor Antonio Mayans, a chapter devoted to Franco's various pseudonyms, and a gloriousgallery of VHS covers of various titles from the collection of Marc Morris. I greatly anticipated this volume because of the rarity of some of the titles especially his works in the porn industry and his later shot-on- video films with his company One Shot Productions. Thrower also includes Franco's unfinished projects which there are many. All in all animpossible achievement painstakingly labored into two glorious tomes which will go down in Film History as the definitive study of this maverick filmmaker. Thank you, Mr.Thrower, for your labor of Love and a big thanks for giving my favorite British Rock Band 'ROXY MUSIC' a small tribute in your marvelous Forward to your book. I wish Jess and Lina could have seen these works but I am sure they are smiling down on you with their eternal approval. Fans better act quickly to purchase it because the first Volume is going for big bucks now. Bravo, Mr. Thrower.

Chock full of info & great pictures
This book is so comprehensive, with just soooooo much information in it about literally every single Franco film ever made! It kept me busy for DAYS looking thru it all. It's the kind of book you will return to many times over the years, trust me. Tons of rare photos and poster repros, too. If you are into Franco, you will LOVE this book! Also look for Volume 1 on ebay while you're at it (although I think it's selling for a fortune on ebay already).

What an amazing book!
Great pictures! Humongous book! Perfect for a coffee table! And even found a few movies I never knew existed! Of course, since the subject is Jess Franco, I'm sure there's still a hundred more movies out there waiting to be discovered! Lol.

The Jess Franco Experience!
I bought this but a few days ago and I can't put the damn thing down. It is a meaty volume and although a bit pricey it's worth every freaken cent. So much knowledge and information on Jess Franco and his films a better tome will never be written. So, if you want the definite word on the great Jess Franco then buy this book. Be prepared to have your mind Blown!

Another nice ode to Franco
Please read my comment on the first edition of this two volume set. I would recommend this book to any one who appreciated the "pushing the limit" that Franco brought to the screen. But you need to have volume one. They are best together.

Near Perfect Coffee Table Monster
Honestly, this is close to perfect, a great tribute to an unusual man who made some good, and more not so good, movies. Lots of text about the films. Solid binding. Jess would have loved it. There's just one glaring problem: the quality of the images is not great. On a scale of one to ten I would give them maybe a six. They are dark, a little soft and might even be called muddy. Not sure why. Soft focus? Some do look okay, maybe a seven and a half. But they could be better. Maybe this was a compromise to keep the price of the books down. So I definitely recommend it, but with that qualification.

Extreme detail
Wow, I had no idea this book would be that comprehensive! I was so surprised by the extreme detail was put forth for every film. The stills are fantastic and just adds to the high quality of this book.

Beautiful work all round
Another classic piece of writing from Stephen Thrower, and worth every penny. This is a work of love, perhaps a perverse love that suits its subject. Mr Thrower does much hard work in researching, reviewing and meditating on the films of the much maligned Jess Franco, a filmmaker who for years was maligned as either "the world's most dangerous..." a title he revealed in, or the most inept producer of cheap horrors ever - pretty much the view of every 80s and 90s horror film magazine going. Having read the first volume cover to cover, and strategically dipping into this second, put me firmly in line with the first group. Franco was a visionary, and almost every film has something to recommend it. Oh, he may have messed up a few times, mostly when called on to produce something totally generic, but he could produce miracles on minimal budgets. The book itself is a work of art, Mr Thrower being a witty, engaging writer with some lovely turns of phrase, but it is also beautifully produced, with fabulous use of still images, both colour and black and white, and printed on quality paper. But this while you still can, because it's a collector's piece that no collector will easily part with in years to come, in the same class as Tim Lucas's All the Colours of the Dark or Trey Howarth's two volume study of Giallo cinema, So Deadly, So Perverse, and look how hard they are to get hold of now.Thank you, Stephen Thrower, for thanks to you i finally learned how to appreciate a maestro.Buy it. You'll love it.

Worth the Wait
As with the previous reviewer, I did wonder if this second volume would actually see the light of day, but it soon becomes clear why we had to wait and that it was definitely worth the wait. This is a mighty tome - a labour of love, but one that somehow manages to be both objective and personal all in one go. A contradiction to be sure, but a welcome one. Collectively both volumes prove themselves to be the definitive work on Franco and the research much be applauded. The reviews are more than just informative, they challenge and inspire one to seek out these works, from the classics to the dreck! An absolute joy to read and look at (I refer of course to the wonderful photographs, many of which are being published for the first time in such a work). The book is a thing of beauty, but perhaps not one to leave around for children or those easily offended - perhaps you own a secret coffee table in a red room, if so, that's the place for this.Excellent and an absolute bargain at the current price.

Exemplary
Superb work - incredible research and detail. Stephen Throwers writing on film is the best I have read (see also Nightmare USA, Eyeball Compendium etc.). Highly recommended. Throwers reviews are better than some of Franco’s films...
