Buyu the Best - Forget the Rest!
The Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) is arguably the best (and maybe the biggest!) of a variety of style manuals. "Style" means the format by which articles, books, journals, magazines and online magazines are written and published. It is a "how-to" guide to achieve pretty darned perfect writing, containing everything conceivable a writer, proofreader, copy editor or managing editor needs to know. Traditionally used for books, it can be used for other types of writing. Rather formidable at first sight, I find the best approach is to choose one small section ("Commas" for example) and just read through it, easily done at one sitting. Commas? Really? Oh, yes. 初版は1906年で本書は最新第17版である。本書の構成を大まかに示すと、パートI(発行プロセス：本とジャーナル、原稿の準備と編集・校正、挿絵と表、権利・許可・著作権の管理)、パートII(文法と語法、句読点、スペリング・語の区分・複合語、名前・術語、数、省略形、外国語表記、数学表記、引用と引用符)、パートIII(資料分類、注と参考文献、著者と出版年、索引）、用語解説のようになっていておおよそのところ第１６版と同じである。細かい検索（たとえば、PhDか Ph.D.か, 複数形はPhDs か Ph.D.’s かなど）をするには本書の構成に慣れておく必要がある。 おおよその構成は同じでも、細部では綿密な改訂が行われている。一例のみあげる。「単数の」theyは、第１６版では「they, their はくだけた文脈では普通になってきているが、硬い書き言葉では容認されていない」といった趣旨の指摘がなされてきたが(p,303)、第１７版では「選択は個人に任されるべし」という具合いに容認する方向に修正加筆されている(p.361)。本書をフルに活用できたら百万の味方を得たも同然だが，それがなかなか難しい。

電子版にすればよかった..
内容については、Chicago writing styleを網羅しているので、辞書的に意味があります。が、いかんせん、字が小さい。必要な個所を拡大できる電子版を思い切って購入すべきだったと反省しています。

仕事に活用してます
実例が豊富で、やはりシカゴマニュアルならば大丈夫だという安心感も得られる。 翻訳関係の仕事の際、カンマ、ダッシュなどの語法なども細かく説明されていて実用的。

Kindle版は文字化けが多い
Kildle版を購入しました。内容については満足しています。価格も安い。 しかし紙版をOCRしたかのような作りのため、文字化けしている箇所が多いです。 単語の一部が文字化けしていることもあり、文脈から読み取る必要があります。

Brilliant resource
This was an upgrade from my online software purchase of the 15th edition (Windows and I've since converted to Macs so it became inaccessible). As a freelance editor, this guide is a brilliant resource. And when I could not find sufficient advice on a footnote/biblio issue I had, I wrote to them, not really expecting an answer, and got a detailed personalised response in six hours. Needless to say, I was both taken aback and impressed. But just a terrific resource for any professional editor working on full-length fiction and nonfiction projects.

The read thing
This is the real Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) - there are, unfortunately, some fakes listed on Amazon.de. This is a HUGE book and is the comprehensive version of the CMS. You don't need anything else if you have to submit a thesis/dissertation or manuscript using the CMS.

It's a classic, so buy it!
I've been using the Chicago Manual of Style for many years. I typically buy new editions when they come out because usage (and even grammar) changes over time. The book is close to being exhaustive--although not completely so because every once in a while I come across some issue that they don't cover. The index is pretty good, but as with any book that covers so much ground, it has to leave some things out. So, you sometimes need to hunt around for a while to find the discussion you're looking for. Not necessarily a bad thing, though, because you're likely to stumble on some other interesting--if unrelated--discussions while doing the search. If you write a lot, this book is pretty much indispensable.
