Nice Overview
This is a nice affordable overview of Northern European printed and painted art during the Renaissance period. All the major painters / printmakers are covered as well as artists working in tapestry, stone, wood and metal. While scholarly, the text is free of art history jargon, a plus. All illustrations are printed in color on heavy glossy stock. My only criticism: some of the illustrations of long church panels get lost in the gutter of this book. Hence the central portions are hidden from view. I had to Google them to see the entire image. Not all reproductions are clear due to size. So, if you're looking for detail, look elsewhere. This book would benefit by publishing in a larger format while including gatefold reproductions.

Beautiful book - just received it today
I'll update this review once I've read the book. At first glance: wow. You'll want to wash your hands before reading this book. (It came shrink-wrapped to boot.) The hardback cover is textured and features a gilt title. It's thread-bound. Has a generous number of plates and a high-quality layout. What is really intriguing is the author deftly interweaves history of the northern Europe during the Renaissance with its art. So for example, in the chapter "Reforming Art" we don't just read that Luther was a contemporary of Cranach's but we discover how their lives were intertwined and how they collaborated together. Looking forward to reading this book! (And exploring this publisher's other offerings.)
