Out of Many: 50 Years of Reggae Music

Very high quality guide to 50 years of Jamaican music even though the best known artists are missing
51 tracks, one track a year from 1962-2012 on 3 CDs, trace the history of reggae from calypso spin-offs through ska, rock steady, lovers rock, roots, electronic riddims, and dancehall. Complied by VP Records, the collection draws mainly on its vaults. I know few of the players (basically, Skatalites, Johnny Osborne, Yellowman, Gregory Isaacs) but many classic songs are here. Very high quality prevails across all the tracks. I have sought a simple way to guide myself through post-1970s trends in Jamaica. This collection does this exceptionally well.

Good over all compilation
As a obsessivde Reggae fan, this album is a good fit, it is priced to try so to speak, what I mean is you are unsure but it ispriced so well you figure heck why not. With that you start playing this and what do you know there are some gems on here and some rarities. Some heavey hitters too, not the usual safe Wailers stuff. Beres Hammond who does not make a bad song, Barrington Levy and older guys too.

It's Good Man!
What a fine collection of music! I was hesitant to purchase this since I figured their would be some duds, but boy was I wrong. I haven't really listened to a lot of Reggae besides the big names who are popular here in the States but this collection is exactly how I pictured the rest of Reggae would sound. Nice rhythms and many different styles and voices. You will really like this collection.

what happen to Bob Marley
I like the selection of artist on this thriology set. But sadden by the fact that Bob Marley was not a part of the selected artists. Wasnt he the one who put reggae on the map???? I think this is a big disrespect to Bob Marley. what about Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown to name a few ledgens of reggae over the past 50 years.

WHAT A DEAL!
For about 12 bucks (plus mailing costs), the three disks of the great CD bring to us 50 classic reggae hits, most of which are done by roots reggae legends such as Freddie MacGregor, Yellowman, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond, Morgan Heritage and a host of major league Jamaican singers too many to mention. Buy this tressure trove of timeless reggae songs yesterday.

Great value, history and vibes
If you are looking for Marley tunes or reggae covers of U.S. hits, look elsewhere. But if you're interested in how Jamaican music has evolved and the contributions of some of the biggest proponents of its many styles, you won't be disappointed. Get an education, AND get your groove on.

A toe in the water of 50 years of Jamaican music
The 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence has resulted in the issue of a number of retrospectives. According to a national newspaper review the best are the double CDs issued by Bass Culture. These were due for issue in August. This became September and now January 2013, 5 months too late!I bought this triple album as an alternative and have not been disappointed. It is presented in a triple gate fold sleeve with a 12 page glossy booklet with illustrations and a narrative tracing Jamaican musical development from quadrille, mento and calypso through ska, rock steady and reggae, dub and deejays, roots and lovers, rockers and steppers to ragga, dance hall and one drop. The music is not actually 50 years of reggae, perhaps the title on the cover is to attract buyers, but a trawl through 50 years of Jamaican music. One track has been selected from each year starting with Lord Creator's celebratory calypso 'Independant Jamaica' and finishing with a 2012 version by Peetah Morgan and Hollie Cook.It is evident from the third CD that the rap and hip-hop popular in USA and Britain can be traced back to Jamaica. To my ears it doesn't make a particularly good listen but maybe my ears are out of touch! I thoroughly enjoyed the first two CDs. A few tracks like Nicky Thomas's 'Love of the Common People', Ken Boothe's 'Everything I Own', Marcia Griffiths' 'I'm Stil in Love With You' and Shabba Ranks 'Mr Loverman' will be familiar to most people, some will be slightly less known or the song will be known by other artists (Cherry Oh Baby).I discovered much to enjoy in this triple album and found it interesting to hear the developments in Jamaican music over 50 years. The booklet is very good in this respect tracking the driving forces of producers and sales outlets. I would like to have known more about the musicians but I guess I have been spoiled by the amazingly informative booklets in Ace Records releases. They make it difficult for everyone else!
