Q: whats the bass like? better than a cheap mp3 dock?

I want real bass you need 12" or 15" speakers in a substantial cabinet but you won't want a pair them sitting on your desk.I have never met an MP3 dock but if it's cheap it's bound to be trash. These speakers are entirely adequate for watching films from a PC and are far better than the Dell speakers that came with the system.

Q: Would these speakers be compatible with a vinyl records player? I am looking to buy them as a present

I'm not an expert but if your player has an audio output socket, you should be able to input an audio signal through the inbuilt "line in" socket on the right-hand speaker. I've successfully fed in a signal from a portable radio-scanner. I use a double-ended male stereo short lead to do this. and it works fine.

Not British plug. You need an adapter.

Q: I notice people confirm that these can be used with a turntable, as you would expect. Nevertheless does it not require a preamp?

Yes it would require a phono pre-amp between the turntable and speakers via RCA cables.
