Defective edition

The mass market version has no margins. How can you read a book where there are no margins? No doubt the collection is good but I need to be able to actually read the stories. Do buy another edition if you want to read the stories.

Worth reading!

A solid, enjoyable, and worthwhile collection of well-written stories. This book is especially valuable for anyone who wants an introductory journey into the modern short story from Poe and de Maupassant to Joyce, Mansfield, and O'Connor.

Great selection of stories

Purchased for a friend who says she has only her short term memory, and she will re and re-read these stories. Great selection of stories.

Fit the bill for school and pleasure

This was a required reading for my son's school. It fit that bill nicely, as it was less at Amazon than other book companies. My mother, who is an avid reader actually found a few short stories that she had not read before, so it was a good find for her, too. This worked for high school, 80+ readers, and all in between.

Time to Catch up on the Old Masters

If you want to catch up on some of the most important names in short fiction, it would behoove you to pick up this anthology. Alongside the names and stories with which you might be familiar: Anthon Chekhov (Gooseberries), William Faulkner (A Rose for Emily), Ernest Hemingway (A Clean Well-Lighted Place), James Joyce (The Dead), and Guy de Maupassant (The Jewels), you will find names and stories you don't hear as often: Lawrence Sargent Hall (The Ledge), or names you might think of as associated with other disciplines: Jean-Paul Sartre (The Wall). The beauty of all of these stories relies on close reading. My two favorite stories are Hemingway's A Clean Well-Lighted Place, and Hall's The Ledge. I confess that the genius of Hemingway's story eluded me for many years until I read it several times over in this collection. My experience with The Ledge is unlike any story I've ever read. Halfway through it I wished I'd never picked it up, but I found it impossible to put down. It still haunts me.
