Poetic and educational, with vivid photographs
Lobos riffs on the conventional narrative by presenting its story in a more poetic prose style, sharing the tale of a Mexican Wolf family's return to the wild. Included in the text is natural history about wolves, their family dynamics and place in the ecosystem. This book is definitely meant to be read aloud to children and the photos add to the conversation possible from each page. I recommend this book be read next to a cozy fire with a mug of cocoa for the kids.

Beware: Your Child Will Want Their Own Lobos
You and your child/children will fall in love with these lobos - or wild wolves - after reading this book. They may ask for one for the holidays! And this would make a great holiday book. Books about taking care of endangered species, or protecting our environment, are wonderful non-fiction books to read and discuss together. As a former principal and preschool through high school teacher and tutor, I realized that it is important to introduce children to non-fiction as soon as possible. Your success in life depends on being able to read and comprehend non-fiction material of which you will read a lot of if you are a life-long learner.Obviously having the knowledge and understanding of how to protect our planet in a wise way is also important to survival. This book teaches about an endangered species in an accessible, compelling and entertaining way. The use of real photographs to illustrate the narrative multiplies the interest. Adults will find this as informative and fascinating as children. You learn about a wild wolf family which is going to be transported from Washington State to Mexico where the species originated. First they are flown to Ted Turner's private farm in New Mexico to acclimate themselves to a move and different terrain. What children may find amusing is that passengers in a plane don't know a family of wild wolves is in the plane storage below! That is something to consider. Finally, the entire wolf family makes it to the forest of New Mexico. They are scared and stay in their kennels. But finally Mama wolf ventures out, and by morning all of the kennels are empty! This is a heart-warming, true story. It's probably best for mature four-year-olds through third grade. This will entice your child to read about other animals. If you read it as a class, ask the children to draw pictures of their favorite part of the story. This would make a great addition to the children's section of a library, too.

Good pictures. Dry prose. Informative. Good for animal lovers
My three year old loves animals and books with/about animals. I thought he'd really like this, but it's a little dry for him. (Or he's a little young for the book I suppose.) There are lovely color photographs of the lobos on every page and text is very informative. It tells the story of a lobo family in a wildlife preserve in Washington State and how they live and there trip back to their original habitat in Mexico, where the indigenous lobo population has been decimated over the years. This lobo family is part of a program to reintroduce lobos to their native environment. There is a lot of text (well a couple of paragraphs) on each page and the prose is kind of dry. It's informational, really, but my son gets bored by it, so I have to summarize a lot as constantly tried to turn the page. There isn't the typical anthropomorphizing of the animals like in most children's books, so maybe that why my son isn't super interested in it.I think this book is best suited for children passionate about animals that are over 5. A five year old will need help reading it, I think an 8 or 9 year old will be able to read it themselves without issue. I will keep reading this with my son as he gets older. Hopefully, he maintains his love of animals and will eventually really appreciate this book.

What a wonderful book!
Lobos: A Wolf Family Returns to the Wild by Brenda Peterson with photographs by Annie Marie Musselman is a great book put out by Little Bigfoot which is an imprint of Sasquatch Books.Using photographs the book tells the story of endangered wolves. The photos are good and the writing is simple enough for children, but also detailed enough that the children can learn.A good children's book about wildlife is a special book because maybe it will encourage children to love nature and the animals in nature. I remember loving books on animals when I was a child and I'm glad there are still good books being made that can bring this subject to children. What a wonderful book!

A Nice Little Book
My partner is one of the leading pro wolf attorneys in the nation so the Mexican Wolf story is nothing new in our household, but this is a nice little story about the recovery efforts. It is pretty small, just the immediate story or a single pair and their nine pups being released in Mexico. It is slight on details but perfect for a young reader. The photos are great and there are a couple of fact pages in the back to fill out the context of the story.

Cute book with lots of beautiful photos
We're all about dogs in this house and that means we also love wolves and coyotes. I try to keep age appropriate books around for my nieces when they visit and this little book fulfills both that need and a chance to teach them a little about wolves. Our family homestead is on the Texas Mexico border in the Chihuahua desert and grey Mexican wolves used to be reasonably easy to spot in the 79s. Today....not so much. This book has lots of color photos and explanation of each step of the adventure and it's accurate. I just wish there more photos of the pack after their release to the wild.

True story of wolf relocation
I've been a fan of Wolf Haven for many, many years - and had no idea that this book was related to them! It's a great true story of how a family of Lobos (Mexican Wolves) were taken from Wolf Haven to their new home - about the pups, the journey, and lots of great information about wolves. The pictures are adorable, and are actual pictures, not drawings. This would be a great book for kids, particularly if they already love dogs - let them learn about the wolves with a sweet story.
