It will register any note that you play whether fretted or not. You can lightly touch a string at the 12th fret so it rings when plucked without pushing it against the fret and compare it to the note you get when you push the string down at the 12th fret. This shows you how close your intonation is. Bear in mind that fretted instruments are tempered scales. This means that some notes are more in tune than others and people who really care tune their instruments to the key that they are playing in. If you want a precision tuner to set the accurate intonation for each string, get a better tuner but this one will get you close. **Q: How can this work with any guitar case? It wouldn’t sit in there safely whatsoever. Very impractical.** A: Better question is, why are you trying to tune a guitar case? This goes on your guitar, not on the case. lol **Q: How well does this work for a bass guitar? I've got a Snark that doesn't register well on my Fender Jazz bass.** A: Not at all. B is almost impossible to register, E not much better.
