Incredibly inspiring
Dr. Denys performed a life saving surgery on me before he passed away and this book captures perfectly what made him such an incredible doctor and person. It makes me want to be better. I'm so grateful for the sacrifices he and his family made so that he could provide life saving care when I needed it most. This book will change your perspective on life, give you more understanding and compassion, and make you a better person.

The book is not perfect. Doug's writing still is a bit repetitive
By way of disclosure, I work at the same hospital as Dr. Denys and he is a friend of mine. We have done several races together (running and triathlon), and he has seriously kicked my butt each time. Although I've worked with him for years and have had many conversations about his heart and path through life, there was still a lot in the book that was new to me.The book tells many different stories. It is the tale of a young boy growing up with a serious disease, and how he learned not to let the disease define him or dictate his path in life. It is also the story of an intellectually curious young man drawn into the world of medicine and surgery, and of the journey from timid pre-med student through arduous training to become an accomplished surgeon. It is the account of an endurance athlete and some of the frankly brutal extreme events he has competed in. And it is the observations of an artist and humanist, who marvels at the frailty and beauty of this world and life therein. It was a mesmerizing read that kept me up well past my bedtime to complete. The book is not perfect. Doug's writing still is a bit repetitive. I would have liked more anecdotes about his encounters with patients and other people, such as the hooker with the slashed face or the corrupt third world administrator who demanded bribes before any charity work could be done in his hospital. These are some of the most touching parts of the book. On a technical note, there are some spelling mistakes, and the quality of the photos is only mediocre.Overall though, it is an excellent read, and one that I would recommend highly. Although Dr. Denys states that his target audience is children with disabilities, the book will also appeal to endurance athletes or amateur runners/triathletes, anyone in the health sciences (especially pre-med and medical students), and those who are interested in the human condition and how people react when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. Well done, Doug. Keep on running.

Inspiring!
I just finished reading Dr. Deny's book. I knew him years ago when I worked with him briefly in his private practice. I am also a marathon runner and we had a few discussions about our running. I am touched and inspired by his struggles and his bravery. I could tell he was an athlete by looking at him, but I had no idea at what cost he paid to be in that kind of shape. I read parts to my son who is also a runner and wants to be a medical doctor. I loved the parts in the book about his medical school and residencies. Dr. Deny's has had some of the most physically and mentally taxing life experiences. I hope he will write again so I can be inspired once more ... This time with a stronger editor :)

... I was mistaken in my long held belief that super heroes are fictional
Apparently I was mistaken in my long held belief that super heroes are fictional. The proof that one exists lies within the pages of this book. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the scar on his chest is in the shape of a giant red S. Hats off to his supportive wife who sounds like a much better catch than Lois Lane ever dreamed of being. Every single page was awe-inspiring and unforgettable. I cheered for his triumphs and anguished over his trials. The only down side for me was the glaring realization that I am at best, ordinary, and disappointingly average. I highly, and most heartily recommend this book. After reading it I purchased a few more copies to give as gifts and I have passed around my own copy to appreciative friends and family.

Very Inspiring!
I am an ER nurse at a hospital where Dr Denys works. He has treated two of my children. I have always enjoyed his kind manner and professional standards of excellence. I heard about his book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It inspires reflection on the power of perseverance, the gift of life, and the reality of miracles. Thanks for sharing this story!

This is a great story - I particularly like the phrase " I didn't want to become my defect". This is a great motivational book for someone who may think they are too ill or other problem to accomplish somethig great. He is a great example.
