INFINITY BY STARLIN & HICKMAN OMNIBUS

A Cosmic Masterwork (Review #368)
As at least one other reviewer has pointed out, this collection doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Reading the back cover further reveals this to be nothing more than something thrown together to coincide with the film release of Avengers: Infinity War (2018). As a helpful aside, if you liked the movie this is a good collection to jump in on as the stories within were the major influences for the film. That said, there is at least a tangential connection between these collected events and both are well worth a read. Infinity Gauntlet is a Cosmic Masterwork and, contrary to some opinions based on how the story ends, did leave a substantial impact on the in-universe stories told after even garnering two direct sequels. What really worked about it was how powerful writer Jim Starlin set up the Infinity Stones to be. Infinity on the other hand is part of Jonathan Hickman's greater narrative from his time on Avengers (2012) and New Avengers (2013) but it still managed to give a new yet familiar take on Thanos in a story that felt like a spiritual successor to the Annihilation (2006) event. It also introduced the Black Order to the Marvel Universe. The art is fantastic too. Including a legend like George Perez on Gauntlet; Jim Cheung on Infinity, who manages to capture the malice of Thanos perfectly where some artists fail; Leinil Francis Yu who is currently working with Hickman still on the X-Men (2019); and others equally talented. These are stories that left an impact, and this collection is worth purchasing despite the circumstances of its creation.5/5

I have 1 of these as a collectors piece.
Its really an odd book, to be honest. Starlin’s Infinity Gauntlet, with Hickman’s Infinity. But it’s all Thanos. And with a copy of Hickman’s Avengers Vol 2, its a giant block of great Avengers tales.

What were they thinking?
What you get here is the original 6 issues of Infinity Gauntlet from 1991 and then skip WAAAY ahead to 2013's Infinity event by Jonathan Hickman and that's what makes up the rest of the volume. All of the Hickman stuff can be found in the Infinity hardcover and it's also in the Hickman Avengers omnibus. Why didn't Marvel do the obvious: just reprint the Hickman omnibus vol 1 and then reprint the older Infinity Gauntlet omnibus that included the bulk of Starlin's Silver Surfer run which set up Thanos' return and then led up to Infinity Gauntlet. That would have satisfied alot of collectors. This new Starlin and Hickman omnibus makes no sense... Especially since the Hickman Infinity and avengers/new avengers material is all part of a bigger ongoing narrative which is why they should've just reprinted the Hickman omnibus vol1 instead...Who is this omnibus for? Blame Ike Perlmutter for this unwanted volume

Poor mapping, great stories but unrelated
This feels like a greedy and lazy match up just because of Thanos and the word infinity is in both titles. I don't think Starlin was involved with Infinity. The art and writing styles have changed so much between them. Both are either really good or pretty good stories but they have very little in common. It almost feels jarring to jump decades like this and just doesn't work smoothly. Get the Infinity Gauntlet omni and Hickmans Avengers omni instead. It'll be more complete and read a lot better and have expanded content.

Gauntlet good, Infinity meh...
Stories included are great. If you can get this at a good price, I couldn't recommend enough. Infinity Gauntlet is a classic story every Marvel fan should read. Having said that, the trade paperback is a fraction of the price and this doesn't include any tie-ins. Infinity is good but not great.
