Now five to six players can explore and settle Catan! In the Catan: 5-6 Player Extension you control a group of settlers exploring and taming the uncharted lands of Catan. Embark on a quest to settle the rich island, competing against more opponents for added fun. Add 1-2 more friends or family without sacrificing ease of play. Add green and brown settlers and expand your island with 2 more harbors and 11 unique, new terrain tiles. This is NOT a complete game! It is only a game extension for 5-6 players. You need a Catan game (aka The Settlers of Catan) in order to play with this extension! Review: We usually use the base game only but the expansion has gotten some play as well when friends or family visit so it has been worth it to get the expansion pack. The extra tiles and cards fit seamlessly with the base game. Differences to note, you end up with 2 sheep ports instead of 1, there is a second desert tile, brick and ore become less rare as there will be 5 of each instead of 3, and there is a special build phase after each player has ended their turn to help players spend their cards before a 7 is rolled again. Make sure that players don't roll before the special build phase is over. One thing that was not mentioned in the rules supplement, if you have 5 players, you can use about half of the extra tiles to make a medium size game. This retains the spirit of playing the base game with 4 players. If you use all of the extra tiles with 5 players, it is more like playing the base game with 3 players.

**Q: Will the extension work for the expansions as well? say i wanted to add more player to seafarers**
A: yeah if you don't get this 5-6 player expansion you won't have the main pieces to play the 5th and 6th players in seafarers. however if you just want to play four players, you can with seafarers expansion... there are also a 1-4 version of seafarers, and a 5-6 extension of seafers. so you need to buy 4 things to play seafers with 6 players. sorry if that doesn't make sense i think i did like the crappiest job of explaining..

**Q: My base Catan is the 3rd edition (off-white box, with red sides and the crest in the upper left).  Will this expansion work with the 3rd edition?**
A: The changes are all aesthetic. The card backs and tiles have different art work, so your board/pieces will look mismatched and the cards will look different. But they can be used together.

**Q: Is there an easy way to tell which pieces belong to which set (for ease of separating the two afterwards, if I want to go back to 3-4 people again)?**
A: An easy way my family has always done it is, after opening the expansion pack (or determining what is part of the expansion pack if you have already opened it) is we put a small E on the back of the expansion pack pieces, and then keep them in a separate package as well.

**Q: Have you tried this with 4 players and found that it makes the game more enjoyable (less crowded board, less spacing conflicts)?**
A: Have played with 5 players. I think that using the expansion pieces with 4 players would definitely make it easier to acquire resources.

We usually use the base game only but the expansion has gotten some play as well when friends or family visit so it has been worth it to get the expansion pack. The extra tiles and cards fit seamlessly with the base game. Excellent game! The original, base game of Catan is awesome and so addictive that I ended up buying this extension too (please note that this product is indeed an extension only.. pointless without the base game). In the age of smartphones, PC games and PlayStation etc. this is a rare item indeed! Entertainment for the entire family! Only one small drawback is that in this newer version of Catan (both base game and extension), the frames and colors for the resources are a little dull. They could easily have been a little brighter and of a more visually appealing color. But rest assured knowing that this is a tiny price to pay for the level of fun this game guarantees!
