This Old Canoe: How To Restore Your Wood-Canvas Canoe

I’m about to restore a 1953 Penn Yan, Kingfisher, wood canvas, outboard motor canoe. This book is a step by step Bible, on how to do just that!! I HIGHLY recommend this book, for anyone else, about to take on a similar project - you won’t regret it!!

The clearest, most useful and practical book on repairing canoes you could imagine. Especially good if you’re restoring canoes from the Chestnut Canoe Company (even including paint color formulas). My only disappointment is that the pictures are all in black & white. Perfectly understandable given the low-volume nature of the subject matter, but a real loss that the book does not include large full-color renditions of the gorgeous photos that accompanied Mike’s online blog. Maybe Mike could post them in an easily searchable website online? Or maybe a sequel book that concentrates on photographs? Otherwise the book is not to be missed!

I purchased several books before this one on making and/or restoring canoes. This is the only one that is a real help and far exceeded my expectations. It gave me the confidence to start stripping the "antique canvass canoe" I purchased and look forward to taking my grandchildren out fishing. Great content not available in too many other places. Photos are somewhat amateur and could be better but they still do the job quite well. All-In-all a must have reference for anyone planning on restoring a canoe to its former glory.

This Old Canoe book is old indeed. None of the materials or practices appear to have updated since this old book was written. Trying to translate 70s tool practices to this century is painful. Finishes are near useless. You might as well have a book limited to hand tools. Augers and hand planes. 🙄Good grief.

Purtroppo il bel libro è rovinato dall'assenza di illustrazioni.Ho la versione kindle ed in quella sono presenti tutte le figure e gli schemi (con le dimensioni effettive ed utili anche per la costruzione )Così il libro risulta davvero poco fruibile.

I thought I knew a lot about restoring wood and canvas canoes, but I have learned many new tricks from this book. Loaded with useful information, beautifully illustrated and fun to read.

I enjoyed this book, I will be going on a canoe restoration course in the fall and am sure this will help immensely.
