Big Brother & The Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin

If you love BBHC and Janis you need this album!
Here is Big Brother and the Holding Company WITH Janis Joplin, not yet famous, playing more for the joy than the Benjamins. The studio was used to recording jazz musicians and kept asking the band to turn down their sound, which is humorous now but then it caused the group to produce a record with a very clean sound. Janis was not half-drunk, the band was not self-important, the musicians were actually darned good so this album is indeed a gem. You can hear various influences in their style, a tiny bit of Jefferson Airplane, some folk, lots of blues included in the rocking recording. I think BBHC deserves some credit for being a band worthy of respect and not simply the guys playing behind Janis. Here is the group before fame and fortune and all the dangers thereof had come to them. I love it! Who would have thought that the first of their albums would be recorded far from The City in Chicago??! Yet if you think of it, since Chicago is a blues haven, it is apropos. Five stars!

Big brother and the holding company band with Janis Joplin
This was an order of three cds. I got two of them together and one separate. The order was correct and I got it on time.

First Outing
I bought this as an LP back in the day, one of the first of the San Francisco bands to make it to LP. (Their second album would really put them on the map; then Janis went solo.) This one is, oddly, constrained. Not a single track, including the bonus tracks, is longer than 2:41! One is only 1:56! This from an era, and a city, known for extended jams. That said, it's not bad, definitely has its moments. It's somewhere between a garage band or a folk-rock band and the actual San Francisco sound.

Raw, explosive - Best of the San Francisco sound
Simply titled Big Brother & The Holding Company (1967), the album is Janis's one attempt to be part of a group ensemble instead of the "star." The performances are proof-positive that Janis never succeeded at blending in - she had too much power. In the opening number, "Bye, Bye Baby," Janis's voice is double-tracked. Thanks to the elegant re-mastering job, the raw beauty of that performance can now be fully appreciated. The group itself produced a fine debut album, but it's doubtful that the album would have been treated to such a lavish re-mastering job without the historical connection that Joplin provided. This is the best of the San Francisco sound: raw, driven rock where the musicians were genuinely talented. Sounds great!!

Man arbeitete also schrittweise darauf hin.
