Great deal, needs a little work to set up.
I bought this to practice on without an amp. After I got it, I had to adjust the truss rod a bit, but no biggie. It came with the right size allen wrench. It played fine without the adjustment, but the action was much better after I set it. The intonation was really close. It's not loud without an amp, but I didn't expect that, since it's not a full size acoustic bass. I'm making this review because of all of the bad ones. While some people will get a bad one I guess, mine is good. Unbelievable deal for the price (under &70 for me). Some things to keep in mind after reading the other reviews. Some had strings break. I noticed while setting it up that the string tension felt wrong and I was going to wind it up tighter... then remembering others who said their strings broke. I checked it first. If you tune it by ear and feel of the string, you may be temped to run it up an octave. I almost did. It probably would have broken. Like any new guitar, you will need to tune it multiple times at the start. It will settle in eventually. Mine held tune well overnight. The truss rod adjustment is not a normal thing for a casual player, but it is easy to do. Look it up on google or youtube to see how. Basically its the adjustment that controls how close the strings are to the fret board at the base. Too far it it will play clumsy. Too close and it will vibrate against the fret board and make an almost static sound. The adjustment is found on this guitar on the inside. If you look at an angle into the hole, with the neck pointing directly away from you, you will see the allen head right under the lip of the hole. With the strings still on I put the short end of the allen wrench into the socket, and make very minor adjustment. You should not have to turn it even a half turn to get where you want. Adjust it a little, play it a bit and let it settle. I pulled up to get the strings closer to the fret. Some people had strings that touched the frets. In this case push down on the allen wrench.... a little at a time. The strings will prevent you from going too far. All in all this guitar is far better than I would have expected for the price. But you have to set it up to get the most out of it. If your not comfortable setting it up yourself, bring it to your local music shop. They will set it up correctly for you, for the right price I guess. I did buy it to practice with, but I might even play it at Church this Sunday, instead of my electric one. BTW Fedex totally screwed up the delivery. They delivered it 3 streets away. Fedex is usually good however and I attribute it to someone new at their company.

Good guitar
I changed the strings straight away for some better ones and for the price point. This guitar is excellent.

I am delighted with this bass!
First off, let me note that this is a $70 AE bass (the lowest price I've ever seen for an acoustic-electric), so I'm not going to compare it to the $500 Michael Kelly Club Custom sitting next to me or the $600+ Kelly Dragonfly basses I've played recently. Instead, I'm going to compare it to my realistic expectations. You don't buy a $2,000 used econobox at the car lot and then expect to drive off of the lot in a new $70,000 Mercedes. You just hope that it will reliably get you from Point A to Point B. Shipping/Packaging: I ordered it on a Thursday; it arrived Tuesday morning. The packaging was well-done with no damage. Color and Finish: The color (which some have complained about) is exactly as it appears in the picture, and I love it! Much to my surprise, the finish is flawless, even in bright, outdoor sunlight. Not a single chip, ding, or scratch. The details and the bridge are pretty cheap-looking, but what do you expect at this price? For the bridge (which was pretty rough in spots), I lightly sanded it and applied some walnut stain - after protecting the body with blue painter's tape. It was a minor detail perhaps, but the bridge went from looking cheap to looking pretty sharp. I also polished the fretboard with lemon oil (it seemed a bit dry), and that added a gorgeous luster. Size and Shape: Be aware that this is a short scale (30") bass - most likely just mass-produced and also used as a guitar body. That's probably why it has an annoying pickguard, something not typically found on an acoustic bass. However, it blends in with the color well, and I don't dare to try removing it. The bass is very, very light in weight compared to most AE basses, almost feeling like it's made from balsa wood. In fact, this "bass" is actually much more like a guitar than a true acoustic bass. Setup and Strings: You don't absolutely have to, but it's a good idea to replace the strings if you want a better sound. I put a $20 set of D'Addario Phosphor Bronze strings (long-scale) on it, and they make a world of difference. When I changed the strings, I also went through a pretty standard setup/checkout on it, and it did need some work, some of which I described above, but it's just a bit of detailing and fine-tuning anyone can do with a little bit of study. [See the comment section of this review for some additional advice.] There was no fret buzz, however, I did make a minor adjustment to the truss rod. adding 1/4 turn clockwise to lower the strings slightly, improving the "playability", but this is simply a matter of preference, not necessity. You may not have to deal with this, but one problem I did have is that the intonation was noticeably off - sharp at the 12th fret. After pulling the strings off, I noticed that the saddle sits in its notch with a little bit of slop. As the strings are tightened, it angles just a bit forward (toward the top). What I did to fix this problem was to fill the front with a thin strip of metal (I used an extra 0.55mm feeler gauge that was perfect when cut down), and between pushing the saddle backwards and more vertical, I gained about 1.0mm at the top of the saddle which was enough to correct the minor intonation problem. I could have just as easily used a strip from a soup can lid. To check the intonation, you can use an inexpensive tuner like the Snark SN-8, or if you have a good "ear", you can simply tune the 12th fret pressed down to the same pitch as the 12th fret harmonic. Another option which would probably improve the tone somewhat is to replace the plastic saddle with a bone saddle. It's not very expensive or difficult to do that, but it seemed a bit like overkill for this bass, so I didn't bother. Hardware and Electronics: The frets were good (no roughness), the tuning machines/pegs and electronics/EQ work fine (although they are cheap - the E string is underamped, and you tend to get feedback easily). All of the various screws/bolts/nuts were tight. Some people pull them and then reinstall them with Loctite, but I didn't see the need for that at this time. I've seen a few complaints here that this bass goes out of tune, but that's probably just due to the strings stretching, something that is normal for any bass and new strings, regardless of price. For a strap nut at the headstock, I just added an inexpensive separate wrap-around headstock strap with a strap button. To sum up, it exceeded my expectations (which were admittedly low), and I added these five items to complete the package: - D'Addario EPBB170 Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Bass Strings, Long Scale, 45-100 - Ernie Ball 4037 Black Polypro Strap - Acoustic Guitar Strap Button (Black) - World Tour BG20D Deluxe 20mm Bass Guitar Gig Bag - Snark SN-8 Super Tight All Instrument Tuner I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a professional/gigging axe or for serious study, but for a beginner, a child, or a bass to take camping, it's a great bargain. Also, it looks nice hanging on the wall next to my other basses, and I'll admit that one of the reasons I went through the "detailing" that I did was so that I could say to my musical friends, "You are not going to *believe* what I paid for this!". For what it purports to be, I'm more than satisfied, and I absolutely give it five stars. -TJ

Nice Budget Bass
I decided to give BCP a second chance and purchased the bass again. This second bass is a much better product. The fret ends are good (much better than the first) - not perfect, but usable. They could use a setup and dressing. The finish is also much better with only a couple of over spray spots where the neck and body join together. This one also has BCP on the headstock (the original one was blank). The bass also has a darker color. Right off, I cleaned and polished the frets, and put new strings on it. The sound is pretty good, and I like the feel. The action is a little high for my liking, so that will probably be adjusted when I get it set up. Compared to the first purchase (which was returned), this one is a keeper. Original Review: I was really wanting to like this bass. Out of the box, it looks beautiful. It's light weight, and although it looks to have electric bass strings instead of acoustic strings, it plays nice. It's not the loudest, which is to be expected with this size, but it is easy to hear and can make for a good practice tool. Just like an acoustic vs electric guitar, it does take more effort to press the strings to the frets to get good sound. In the short time I had this, I did find it helped me to be more proficient on my electric bass. That being said, there were just too many flaws with this model. First off, the finish started peeling and flaking away along the fret board. My fingers would catch on the flakes and was not comfortable at all. Secondly, the fret ends were far from finished, with some having very sharp jagged protrusions (see attached pictures). This really made playing across the fretboard an unpleasant experience. There were a couple of other minor finish flaws as well. I could deal with those, but the ones along the fretboard were deal breakers. I'm sure I could pay someone double the price I paid for the guitar to fix the frets and hopefully redo the finish. If I were going to do that, I would have purchased a more expensive bass to begin with. In the end, this one is getting returned in hopes of finding a better acoustic bass.

Not really for a beginner
So, I have zero experience but a huge interest in learning bass, but didn't want to sink a lot of money into it, just in case. I have a guitar that I never was able to do more than tune due to lack of and I couldn't seem to master covering 6 strings with my small hands. I bought this acoustic bass because it was cheap and I liked the blue. (Also I thought if I did get good, I could bring it with me to camp fires and jam with my friends.) I found a local music store that does repairs and also gives lessons and the guy said bring it in and he can get it set up for free or tell me if it's worth keeping or finding something new. He has been playing for a long time and he made it sound great (to me) but said this and I'll pass it along. He said that for a $90 bass it wasn't that bad. The action is too high and the tuning knobs the ones at the top (I can't quite remember their name because again beginner) are too loose. He said the strings were ok, but the action was going to make it tricky to learn to play since I would have to work harder to press down the strings. And the loose knobs were going to mean that keeping it in tune was going to be extremely hard. He couldn't actually get it in completely in tune because even bumping the head or tuning t he next string was knocking it out. Maybe that was just the one I had or maybe it's all of them, not sure. Overall he said if I wanted to keep it not to sink any more money into it because it wasn't worth it and learning things might not sound completely correct because of the tuning. I had read a bunch of reviews that said it's great if you do all of these different things to it and I showed him one and he agreed with all of them and said if I wanted to try them myself using youtube (as one of the reviewers suggested, I could but for him to do it would cost around $90- $120 which would end up being more than I paid for the bass itself. He also told me that if I was really committed to learning I would likely outgrow this instrument in 6 months, and he didn't suggest learning on an acoustic to begin with. I thanked him and came home to see if I could do the things necessary and for someone that had never played a stringed instrument they were daunting and felt like I was going to end up destroying it so I'm going to return it. If you've read this far it's also worth mentioning that if you decide to return it, it's going to cost close to $15 as it is not a free return. So between shipping, gas and tape to ship it back I'm out $20 plus the price of a playable instrument.
