AUTO-VOX Wireless Backup Camera Solar Magnetic, 1-Min DIY Install

This is the second camera I’ve purchased from Auto-Vox for towing my camper. My previous camera worked well (and still does), but it wasn’t designed to be mounted behind a tow vehicle. As a result, I was pushing it beyond its intended use. That led to occasional buffering and compression artifacts on the display. This new model solves all of those issues—and then some. Installation is a breeze. You mount the included plate, and the camera snaps onto it magnetically. The magnets are extremely strong, but for added security, you can use the included socket head cap screw to lock it in place. There's a USB-C charging port under a waterproof cover and a simple on/off switch beside it, accessible from the bottom of the camera. I charged it once via USB at the start and haven’t needed to since. The screen is excellent and comes with a 6-foot cable that plugs into your car’s 12V socket. Once powered, it automatically wakes the camera and starts the live feed. The image has a slight fisheye effect, which actually helps by widening the field of view behind the trailer. The display allows you to adjust brightness, guide lines, image orientation, and screen timeout settings. By default, the screen is set to turn off the camera after about two minutes, but I immediately changed that to stay on continuously—I use it as a rear-view camera, not just a backup cam. The manual warns that this mode may drain the battery faster, but in my experience, that hasn’t been an issue. During my longest test—a four-hour daytime drive—the battery still showed 3 out of 4 bars. Because it’s solar-powered, it’s constantly recharging. In fact, mine even showed it was charging indoors under regular lighting. The manual claims it can operate for 45 days without solar, though that seems optimistic. Still, the next time I used it, it was fully charged and ready to go. One feature I’d like to see is an option to hardwire the camera, but Auto-Vox offers other models for that purpose. The benefit of this one is portability—if your camper goes into storage, you can remove the camera in under 30 seconds for safekeeping. In conclusion, this camera is an excellent value. It delivers a clear, stable image from the back of my trailer (40–50 feet away) to the display in my vehicle, with no noticeable interference. I’m very satisfied with this purchase.

I got this because rear visibility in an FJ Cruiser is notoriously atrocious, particularly with and because of their crappy backup camera. This camera is outstanding, such a massive image, almost 180°. The camera magnet for slapping it anywhere on the rear of the vehicle is old-school speaker solid, it goes on with a clang (or clunk) and won't budge, and I've tried. Setup is a breeze, just plug the monitor into your cigarette lighter outlet and select the kind of view you prefer. I set it to be on all the time while driving so I can better see who is hanging off the rear corners, truly no blind spots anywhere, anymore! It uses almost no power at all, plus the solar cells on the top of the camera help out. A great buy, I'd get it again!

A little different from some descriptions that I had read. I thought the monitor had a battery that you charged and then it needed no other power till it need charging. Not true, needs to be plugged into a cigarette lighter or other source to power a USB interface. I also wish it had a way to black out the monitor screen short of disconnecting it from the power. You can set it to go to sleep in 2, 4, or never modes. If you disconnect from the power source, it reverts to a 4 minute sleep mode. Camera and screen work well. I thought that the camera signal would not reach the monitor due to an all steel work shell, but it works just fine. It only really attaches magnetically as the "secure bracket system " is way to complicated for general use and not very secure. I just take the camera off and put it in the cab. Picture is clear but there is some latency with the speed of the camera. Overall I am very pleased. I purchased a different monitor mount than the one the comes with. Better holding power and more adjustments.

Amazing pic and truly plug and play. I love the wireless connection and the ease of connecting it. A must have especially if you are attaching a trailer to your vehicle

It died after six months. I really did like the camera and I’d worked wonderfully while it did work. Camera was left off for 3 weeks, now will not charge nor connect with the monitor. I will contact computer service and see if I get any response, and update from there

This camera is exactly what we needed on our 40-foot motorhome to monitor our towed trailer/vehicles. The built-in backup camera on the motorhome doesn’t give us the full view so the Auto-Vox satisfies that need and does so with a super clear picture. We chose this camera for its longer range than most other back-up cameras. The setup was so easy and Customer Service was very responsive to questions.

Mounted this camera on my skid loader to give me a view while working in reverse. Picture quality is good and set up was super easy. I drilled the metal plate for a more secure mount for the camera. My issue is when in motion the camera vibrates and that gives you a vibrating image on the monitor. Also the grid zone is too wide which is not adjustable. The length of grid can be adjusted but not the distance front to back.

Excellent backup camera. I have only needed to charge it once since I purchased it last year. Picture quality is good and the magnetic bracket has work very well. The monitor is a little small but it works for what I need it for.

I was honestly a bit skeptical at first, but this backup camera blew me away. Installation was exactly as advertised—took me barely a minute to get it on my truck. No wires, no drilling, no stress. Just stuck it on, turned it on, and it worked right away. The base is really strong, and it hasn’t moved at all even after a few long drives. The 1080P monitor is super clear, even at night. I was surprised how far the signal reaches—I’ve used it on my truck and the video feed stayed stable the whole time. The solar charging is a great touch since I don’t have to worry about running out of battery. It comes with a storage bag too, which is perfect for when I want to switch vehicles or store it safely. Overall, this is easily one of the best purchases I’ve made in a while. It made backing up so much easier and safer. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a reliable, portable backup camera!!!!

Quick summary of first impressions: Out of the box this unit feels good quality. It is weighty and robust. Mounts straight onto anything metal, or via the backing plate supplied Lightning fast installation, once fully charged it's pretty much plug and play Impressive image quality which stays strong a long distance from the monitor Great temporary camera to switch between any vehicle, trailers, boats, caravans, horseboxes, etc Easily removable for safekeeping and security This is the 3rd Auto Vox solar camera we've had. The others were fitted on our motor homes, worked well, rarely needed charging and were reliable. The monitor powers via the cigarette lighter connection and comes on when you start the engine or activate it via button the lighter connector. We selected this one as it's magnetic and so easily be moved from one vehicle to another. Very useful if you have multiple vehicles, or only need a reversing camera for specific trips. It avoids the expense of paying a garage or auto electrician to fit one permanently, or breaking into the wiring loom for a DIY fix if you aren't confident. It sticks like cement to the car - no fear of it coming loose. No worries about fixing to a long unit either, range is excellent. Partner walked several houses away and round the corner and the picture never wavered. Be aware it's not the prettiest unit aesthetically, and quite large, so check dimensions if your car is small. An improvement might be to add extra connectivity - USB as well as/instead of 12v cigarette lighter Also, as so many of these cameras are fitted to cameras or motor homes an option in WHITE would be great if materials permit.

I’ve been using an Auto-Vox wireless camera for a couple of years, and this upgrade is excellent. The claim of 1-second install is accurate – I plugged in the monitor screen and the camera magnetically clamped immediately onto my campervan. Instant success. No wiring, no drilling. No screws. Excellent. It comes supplied with two metal plate options (one flat and one angled) if you need to install the camera onto non-metallic surfaces, but I didn’t need those. The ease of the magnetic install is a big advantage for me as it means I can reposition the camera and use on other vehicles. The supplied storage bag is excellent for keeping everything safe when not in use. The 5-inch screen is perfect for my needs, and the clear image is superb. There is a small sun hood on the screen which will help in bright sunlight. The infrared night mode is very useful giving clear visibility in all light levels. The battery life on my previous model was good, and this new camera has solar cells to charge the battery so I don’t expect I will need to use the USB charging cable very often. The 18-month warranty is a nice addition. I’m very pleased with this camera. Highly recommended.
