Lucretius: On the Nature of Things (Loeb Classical Library No. 181)

Lucretiuis
Lucretius's On the Nature of Things is not easy Latin. If Livy is easy and Horace is hard, then Lucretius is much closer to Horace in difficulty. So, if you know a little Latin, but you're not really great at it, this compact volume with the Latin on the left-hand page and the English on the right, is the book for you. The introduction is excellent. Of course, there's no poetry in the English, but if you're after a basic understanding of Lucretius views, the prose if fine. Lucretius is brilliant - no one is going to dispute that - but, like St. Autustine who is also brilliant, we need not agree with his views in order to enjoy his work. By the way, if you're looking for a good verse translation to read along side this prose work, take a look at the one by A. E. Stallings. She's a poet as well as a deft translator.

Best Book of All Time
I don't use a title like that lightly -- I actually mean it. I am a writer, a thinker, and a passionate, life-long reader. And if I had to choose one book to read for the rest of my life, this would be it.It never gets old, and I never stop learning from it, or marvelling at the beauty of the poetry.Definitely one of the best things ever written. If you don't know it, order it right away, and read it.

Loeb Classics are the best!
It’s so good to re-read Lucretius. Loeb Classics are definitely a go to whether it’s leisurely reading or a dedicated pursuit of understanding philosophy.

Smaller than a paperback and the print is too tiny to read. AMAZON should be ashamed!!
I was absolutely disgusted to open this package to find such a tiny, tiny book. Especially at their price point. I've returned both books post haste.

It's been around for thousands of years
No review actually necessary. That Amazon would ask me to is a result of automated mail. I have to think that if you are considering buying it you know that. If by some slim chance you are unfamiliar with the Loeb Library, the book has Latin on one page, an English translation on the facing page.

Good; I have not read any other translations in poetry, but I have read one prose translation. This is far better.

I progress to undo the strict knot of religion.
This book is the premier text on Epicurean Philosophy, and it has faithfully translated here.

A scholarly translation
If you are going to study Lucretius then you need the Latin and the translation on facing pages - Loeb does it.

Fantastica Compra
El libro está muy bien editado. Letra no demasiado pequeña. Me gusta que el contenido de la hoja izquierda en latín, aparezca en inglés en la derecha. Me está permitiendo repasar conjugaciones de latín.Respecto al contenido, mi opinión es irrelevante.

The best edition available
For anyone with a reasonable command of Latin, I would recommend this edition. It is well worth its price, since it contains the original Latin text on the left page and the English translation on the right. It is also a very good quality hardcover edition. For those who do not know Latin, perhaps a Penguin translation would be a better idea, but if you are able to appreciate the original metric (the translation is in prose), buy this book.

Daug at uni said better than course copy - type slightly larger ... could be bigger (from an old gal's pont of view)
