For a film of “excitement, wit and intelligence” (Rex Reed, New York Observer), your hunt is over. As star and director of White Hunter, Black Heart, Clint Eastwood crafts one of the most acclaimed movies of his enduring career. He plays brilliant, driven filmmaker John Wilson (loosely based on the legendary John Huston), who’s determined to turn his new project in Africa into a grand personal adventure hunting a wild elephant. Jeff Fahey, Marisa Berenson and George Dzundza co-star in this rugged and absorbing tale from the novel by co-screenwriter Peter Viertel, who worked with Huston in Africa in 1950 on The African Queen. Filmed in Zimbabwe and London, White Hunter, Black Heart is a bold trek into the heart of adventure. Set your sights.

Probably not what you'd expect from Mr. Eastwood
Clint Eastwood does an impeccable job portraying a thinly veiled representation of one of Hollywood's most eccentric, narcissistic, and talented directors, John Huston. The story is about the lead-up to shooting The African Queen (called The African Trader here), but don't expect to see much of the movie actually being made. It's well-known that Huston became obsessed with bagging a prize elephant during filming, and that's the focus of this film. Clint Eastwood in this film is nothing like the Clint Eastwood we are used to seeing; instead, we get John Huston's affected mannerisms and speech patterns. It's like a living embodiment of toxic masculinity, only with strangely effete manners. Other characters in the film are initially drawn to this over-the-top personality, only to later become repelled by his dangerous and irresponsible narcissism. It's a fascinating character study of one of Hollywood's more notorious figures, and a testament to Eastwood's often under-rated acting skills that he pulls off a role that could have easily fallen into parody. I love Clint Eastwood, but he certainly made me hate this character. Mission accomplished, I guess? Anyway, if you are a true Eastwood fan, you should probably watch this if for no other reason than to admire his versatility.

Aimed Too High.
The vibrancy of John Huston was lost by trying to plug a vibrancy into a cast that was not there. The disgust that would have been shown by such powerful people as Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn was totally missing. I got the impression characters were cast for there resemblance instead of their acting ability. And Clint...he's even the good guy when he plays the bad guy. He should have cast a real obnoxious SOB for the lead.

Not One Of Clint Eastwood's Best Movies
This movie is based on John Huston's (Played by Eastwood) shenanigans in Africa while filming his classic, "The African Queen", starring Humphrey Bogart and Kate Hepburn. Evidently, according to the movie, John Huston was a total drunk, obnoxious loud mouthed A-Hole, and the way Huston is portrayed in this movie is neither interesting nor amusing.Being a Clint Eastwood fan, the only reason I can think of to see this movie, is if you want to see ALL of Clint Eastwood's movies. Other than that, this movie is a hard pass.

A very interesting movie about the world of moviemakers, their dreams and contradictions.
This film deploys colorful and vast contrasts of the world of the movie makers. Everything occurs in Africa's raw scenario, a part of the world where, at that moment, action and characterization take their right hue.

Wacko- John Huston
Clint did the best and closest impersonation of the wacko, John Huston in this film. Huston was very much more complex than we will ever see here in this film, and it only give us hints into his personality which encompassed a genius for filmmaking, while exhibiting self destructive and risk taking behavior that sometimes exerted a toll on those near to him... and I'm not talking about the poor guide in the movie here. I love the "African Queen". This helps show the background. Clint has the mannerisms down without resorting to affectation.

Eastwood at his weirdest
Eastwood is good at acting in this film, but it's not his best work. Great hunting scenes and action, but the rest of the film is a portrayal of Hollyweird at it's worst.

You Can See The Heart Of Darkness In The Distance, But You Never Quite Get There
Well made, strange movie which is a thinly veiled story about events in Africa during the making of the African Queen. I assume the story is fictional. I felt that Clint Eastwood was mis-cast at the director. He never seems to inhabit the character of the director. The story seems to miss the mark, too. There is a heart of darkness theme going on, but the story never seems to quite make it to the darkness. In the end, the story leaves you with a tragedy that is both unexplained and inexplicable, but maybe that is the point.

Très bon film; Clint Eastwood différent de ses personnage habituels. Dans ce film, élégance et raffinement comme il apparaît sur les tapis rouges. Histoire originale et photographie magnifique! Un de ses meilleurs films. Bravo M.Eastwood!
