Maria Tallchief: America's Prima Ballerina

A very interesting book about a famous and great ballerina. Of course everyone wants to know the "details" of her life with Balanchine which she writes about but with great discretion; i.e. we do not learn anything about what they did in bed but she strongly hints at the fact that it was a relationship based more on their common need, hers to dance and his to make dances for her, a phenomenon that characterizes most of his relationships with the ballerinas he married.Her book is honest although almost always, "politically correct", that is, she never gossips or smears any particular person but her outlook on life in general is optimistic and positive. One gets an insight into not only the world of ballet but also what it felt like at times to be a real American native indian and, at the same time, a famous American ballerina. Reading between the lines you know how she suffered when she lost favor with the great Balanchine as his number one dancer as his eye, as was his tendency, looked to younger and more amazing dancers such as Suzanne Farrell. However, her courage and talent kept her going and she always moved on in her career and personal life to new heights and happiness.Like many dancers, she is a true survivor.

I love the book, but I'm sorry that I bought kindle edition - no pictures there. I didn't know that it comes without it. It is very convenient with Kindle, and helps preserve trees - pictures is worth thousand words. Body shape, face expression, excitement, sorrow, human and artist, history of the art of dance. I missed that all. The book is a part of dance history, but without a picture for example of "Firebird" part of it is not in my hart. So for a dance lover my advice is - get one with photos.

The nature of an autobiography is the intensity of emotion in telling one's own story. You will not miss that in this book. It is the autobiography of an adult written for adults, so the word choice and content in places reflect that. I did let my daughter (10) use it for a project-- but I preread entire sections and post-it noted paragraphs for her to use.All in all, she is a facinating woman with a story of colliding cultures, competing lives, and a passion for life.

Beautifully written by Kaplan as told, I assume by Maria Tallchief! What a memory she had and able to tell us such wonderful details of her journey as a ballerina, the struggles, the successes, all of it.. I loved it and keep re-reading the details! A wonderful book I will pass on to my grandaughters, both studying ballet and loving it!

The book was very interesting and it was wonderful to have her perspective. I feel she was very honest in the approach she used to share her life story and those who were involved in it. My only objection is it would have been a bonus to have included pictures of her various successes. . . .

Very interesting on a number of levels. Good biography and anyone who enjoys the ballet will enjoy this. Ms. Tall Chief was a very interesting person.

Met her once at a book signing at Rizzoli in Water Tower Place. A nice, friendly, classy lady. Good worthwhile book too.

A very good read. Tallchief gives a wonderful overview of her career and personal life, which includes her marriage to Balanchine.

このお方はジョージ・バランシンの四人目の奥様。オセージインディアンの血が入った女性で、「アメリカ初のプリマバレリーナ」と呼ばれた偉大なお方。最近本国では「マイノリティバレリーナ」として再び脚光を浴びてるようだが、トールチーフが偉大だったのは「マイノリティ」だったからではない。ご本人もそんな考え方はしていない。彼女は最初に世界的名声を博したバランシン・バレリーナだ（ダニロヴァは元々有名）。バランシンが彼女を鍛え抜き、彼女のスターパワーが初期のニューヨークシティバレエ団（NYCB）の名を高めた。アテクシはバランシン本をストーカー読書してきて、「バランシン最大のミューズ」は実はスザンヌ・ファレルではなくこのお人やないか感じている。バランシンがNYCBを結成する以前からずっとバランシンと共にいた女性であり、バランシンを知り尽くし学び尽くした人だ。その証拠に、バランシン財団のインタビュープロジェクトではどの時期のバランシンダンサーよりも多くインタビュー対象になっている。インタビュー群はYouTubeにアップされているんで、ご興味のある方は是非是非。トールチーフ様の信念は揺るぎない。「ジョージは詩人であり音楽家であり史上最高のダンスメーカーです。そして口では説明せずに実際にやって見せる人でした。私はジョージがやって見せたことを忠実に実行しようとしただけです。今は私が言葉で以って彼の天才を説明しなければならないと感じています」とおっしゃっていた。「バランシンはテクニカル過ぎて」と言ったマーゴット・フォンティンに怒りを表明してたりなんかして。「マーゴは親友です。しかし彼女のバランシン観は間違っています」とな。幼少時よりピアニストとして訓練を受けコンサートピアニストの道も考えたというレベルのお方。本書でバランシンのピアノの腕前を「悪くない」と評していて「お、さすが」みたいな。絶対音感の持ち主で踊る時にカウントを取ったことがないそうな。バランシンから学び取ったバレエ学の圧倒的な深さを伺うに、非凡なる能力と非凡なる知性の持ち主であり、弛まぬ勉強家であり、情熱的な学習者であり、「バランシンの生徒」という点では最優等生だったのではと。ダニロヴァ以外ではバランシンと最も対等だったバレリーナのような印象もある。そいやバランシンは彼女を「タイガー」と形容していた。十九歳でバランシンに求婚され、しかし結婚生活の記憶は「毎日毎日、ひたすら訓練とリハーサル」だった。トウシューズ訓練を早い時期（七歳）に施されてしまったせいでトールチーフ様のテクにはよろしくない癖がついていたらしい。バランシンはその矯正に努め、トールチーフをバレリーナとして作り直す。「持てるエネルギーは全て舞台に」ってことで寝室のベッドも別々。家事はバランシンがほぼやってくれる（料理好きで庭仕事好きで大工仕事好きでアイロンかけ好きの旦那）。ミューズは所帯臭くてはいかんってな感じかしら。『赤い靴』のモイラ・シアラーが、バランシン妻同士の関係性の特徴は「お互い対して性的嫉妬がない」で、「どこまでもバレエ中心で、いずれもセックスがあまりない結婚生活だったのでは」と憶測してしていたが、さて。バランシンはトールチーフの後に絶世の美女タナキル・ルクラークと結婚しているが、「彼は仕事にしか興味がない」と涙する新妻を最初の妻タマラ・ジェーヴァが「ジョージと結婚するってそういうことなのよ」と慰めていたもんだった。ちな、彼女の最初のバレエ教師はニジンスキーの妹のニジンスカである。束の間の彼氏にはエリック・ブルーンだのヌレエフだの、要はそういう女性だ。それこそ幼少時から女王様は超一流としか付き合わない。バランシンと離婚後、さすがに年齢相応にちょい遊びたくなって遊び人系と付き合い結婚までしているが、速攻で見切りをつけて離婚。性格が悪いので有名だったジェローム・ロビンスが彼女には優しかったと書いているが、この女性には誰も喧嘩を売れない感じがする。少女漫画家の山岸涼子さんがバランシンとトールチーフの関係を題材に、「男の身勝手の犠牲になる女」の漫画を描いていたが（『黒鳥』）、現実のトールチーフ様はそんなタマではない。そして、離婚後も友好的に続いたバランシンとの関係が素晴らしい。トールチーフが引退した後、彼女の娘さんに向かってバランシンが「『火の鳥』が成功したのは君の母上の力だったんだ。君の母上はそれは素晴らしかったんだ」と語る場面が感動的。面と向かってダンサーを褒めないバランシンが初めて自分を賞賛するのを聞いたそうだ。トールチーフ様は「とてもとても嬉しかった」と書いている。エピローグで、死の床にあるバランシンと今生最後の面会をする様子が回想される。手を動かすバランシンに「何をしているの」と聞く。意識朦朧のままバランシンは返す。「ダンスを作っているんだ」。トールチーフ様自身は2013年にお亡くなりになった。
