Review: Really good series - The interaction between the two characters is interesting and gripping. The cases are riveting Review: Great Series - The dynamics between Lynley and Havers are excellent. They never overstep the mark and are always professional and yet one can see friendship--a deep regard based friendship--building. The acting is wonderful as at time one resents Lynley's insensitivity and self-pity and at others one feels for his situation. Havers is grossly misunderstood and deserves far more from the police force than it gives her credit for; especially in terms of Lynley who fails, in my opinion, to be as generous as he owes her. Pity that his wife/love interest is not consistent. I liked very much the last actress as she was naturally warm and seemed well-adjusted which allowed me, as a women. to understand Lynley love and need for her first Emma Fielding; then and by far the weakest actress . Lesley Vickerage and the best most sympathetic actress in the role Catherine Russell. Lesley Vickerage I found a self-involved, cold woman and it remained a mystery to me why Lynley would be interested in her. She also seemed far more impressed by his title and position than the man himself. The stories were very well developed and worth watching both for the plots, their complexity and for fine acting of Nathaniel Parker as Inspector Lynley and also and especially Sharon Small as Barbara Havers.

Having enjoyed the one episode
I caught an episode of this almost by accident (repeated on BBC3?) and recognised some of the scenery in the Peak District and especially in the village where my Parents lived for almost 40 years. Having enjoyed the one episode, so I bought the box set. While there are grounds for comparison with Morse (Lynley's classic Jensen, later replaced by a Bristol) and other "cop partnerships", Lynley is well drawn and absolutely not perfect, so is a credible character perhaps in the vain of a 21st century Peter Wimsy. Havers, similarly, is a strong character well portrayed and their professional relationship develops entirely believably. The supporting cast is also very strong: Helen, Lynley's love interest /wife is particularly superbly portrayed. So there it is. It's a good series, well made, strongly written and performed in the same category as Morse, Lewis, Vera, and others. If you like the genre, you'll love this.

Great muder drama with two superb actors
Saw all the series on TV but, so enjoyed them, that I wanted to see them again. Excellent detective series, showing the private lives of the two main characters. I enjoy it because it doen't show gory details or too much violence; just enough to support the story line.

Watcheable series but earlier half better
A good series and Sharon Small was the standout character throughout . Reference Lynley's wife Helen I do feel if you are going to change and replace an actor half way through that you don't at the same time give the character played a complete personality transplant from an unpleasant cold and zero personality person to a gregarious likeable one. Assumed he had found a nice new girlfriend at last for a couple of episodes! All said though worth a watch even if a bit annoying towards the end.

Best detective series I've seen.
To my mind Daniel Parker is a little wooden, perhaps aristocratic reserve ?? (It turns our he's an earl). OTHERWISE BRILLIANT. I've now seen the final episode. The BBC decided not to continue the series after Series 6 Episode 2, so lots of threads are left unresolved. Still VERY good.

Excellent series
I haven't watched the complete series yet. The acting of the two main characters is excellent. They contrast each other very well. The upper class and working class attitudes are very well dealt with. This is an excellent series

After reading the 1st 15 books in Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley series I found out about the PBS series disc set and ordered it while still in Europe. I could not wait to return and see how the books were transferred to the TV series. After wathcing the first 6 episodes I can say I am more than pleased. The books are complex with many subplots and it is difficult to get that complexity into a 1 1/2 hour show but they do a very good job. The acting is excellent and the locations give the same feel as conveyed by the books. I look forward to finishing the series and consider this a good purchase.
