Always poke
Having been the the islands six times I only "discovered" poke this last trip to Maui. It seems to be more of a thing on Maui than perhaps O'ahu and the big island. Or maybe the Texas boy just looked past it in 02-06 when my daughter lived out there. Always a fan of sushi the freshness of the fish on Hawai'i always amazes me. So now I am ALL ABOUT poke. Wife and I figured we would try our hand at poke when we got back to Houston and knew we could get actual sashimi grade fish at Rose's in Seabrook. Experimental success!!! I am not one to follow recipes but I did follow the package recipe the first try, after that my creativity has run wild. Every try has been a huge success!!! NOH poke spice pack ROCKS!

I can't believe I'm reviewing this, but....
...it's just one of those awesome little things you have to share. I was stationed in Hawaii for more than 8 of the last 24+ years at different times and one of the joys of Hawaii (among many) is the great local food. The downside is that finding the particulars that make local Hawaiian cuisine so fun and tasty are hard to locate in one place in most of the rest of the USA. A common favorite is a dish called Ahi Poke. Though you can Poke lots of other fish, Ahi Poke is the most frequently enjoyed. Ahi is just tuna, though a slightly different type. The one used for this dish is a sushi grade raw Ahi. The part that is Poke is a blend of various spices, oils and a specific seaweed and it gives an absolutely unique and delightful flavor. It is a firm family favorite whether we simply scoop some over a dish of rice or make it into a sushi wrap. Most people who like any sushi at all love Ahi Poke. Alas, thinking I should be able to find all the various spices and ingredients in any big city I didn't bring any with me from Hawaii. Getting all of those ingredients in one spot proved impossible. Even just consistently locating all of them anywhere was an exercise in hours of cross city driving and frustration. So, on the off chance one day I typed in a search for the brand of pre-packaged Ahi Poke mix I used in Hawaii..Noh..and voila: Amazon had it! I bought a case just in time for my nephews birthday and he was absolutely gobsmacked to have a nice big bowl of his favorite food. This package makes THE Ahi Poke. You can find recipes using more common seaweeds or other substitutions all over the net, but this is the real deal. That same rich and exotic flavor blend you remember from that shabby shop on the North Shore is right in this package. Each individual package is labeled to work for 1 pound of fish but I found that using 3/4 of a pound gives about the correct flavor. A pound makes it a tad weak. Of course, that's a lot of fish anyway. We tend to think in terms of hamburger or steak but the richness of raw Ahi means people will generally eat significantly less in ounces than they would other meats. Love this stuff and I certainly recommend it. The price may seem high for a packet of spice, but the bulk prices on that seaweed, when you can even get it, is pretty high so this is actually quite reasonable. Happy Sushi!

but it was awesome..
Had a packet of this Poke mix in the pantry for a long time... picked it up on our last trip to Hawaii. Finally got around to using it, not expecting much, but it was awesome.... after that I ordered up a pack of 12. Not as good as 'our' recipe, that we got from a Hawaiian local, but still really good and very easy to make.... just make sure you use a good quality fresh fish. Loving it.

Excellent, but costs too much
Excellent, but costs too much. You can get the salt at saltworks in bulk for a fraction of the cost. I can get the seaweed at Berkeley bowl, but sure it is available other places. So, if you are planning to make Poke once, this is great. If you are in love with the stuff, like I am, better ways to purchase the ingredients.

Quick and easy
The NOH Hawaiian Poke Mix is tasty, and a nice batch of poke can be quickly made. I have a friend who prefers less spicy "Island Style" poke, as found in groceries on the Big Island. It would be nice if you could create a mix for this style, and other flavors/styles for variety. Adding toasted sesame oil and green onions to the poke, and optionally soy sauce is all that is needed to make a delicious snack!

Easiest Way to Make Delicious Poke!
I LOVE Ahi Poke! This kit makes it so easy to make a batch at home or for a Hawai'ian Pot Luck. All you need to add is sushi-grade Ahi, scallions (green onions) and sesame oil! I used to buy this product at a local Asian grocery store but they stopped carrying this product. Fortunately, I can now buy them on Amazon.com and with Prime shipping. How convenient is that?!?

Great Poke mix
I've been buying Noh Poke mix from our local oriental food store but they've been out for awhile. My family loves poke and it's so much cheaper to make it myself and I think it tastes just as good, if not better than the store bought. So glad that Amazon carries these...they're less expensive too!

Done right, Hawaiian would say “broke da mouth”
Love the product, just didn’t know what ingredient triggered the CA cancer causing ingredient warning sticker on the package. Everything causes cancer these days.
