Survived bear encounter; hard to open
We got this for its larger capacity to bring on a trip along with a smaller traditional bear barrel. We were pleased with the capacity of this barrel but disappointed how hard it is to open and close. With this barrel you actually have to turn three screws open or closed through many turns rather than just making a quarter turn as with our other model. On the second night, a bear came and interacted with both barrels. It left one scratch in our other black barrel but took this one away entirely. I'm not sure if the less rounded design made it easier for the bear to move the barrel or if it was random which one it took.We found the barrel pushed off a small cliff (10-20 feet) the next day and discovered it intact but well marked from the bear's efforts. In short, this barrel is hard to open for humans and bears alike. It did save our food so we'll give it four stars.

Wow it's so big
I'm planning a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park and it's required to have a Bear safe food container...This seems to be made of a sturdy polymer...It has a gasket on top and a pressure valve on the bottom...Sitting on it seems ok not sure yet about uneven ground...upside down is a little more stable and the pressure valve is recessed so as not to notice..........I have compared it's size using a standard five-gallon water jug, a 70-liter backpack, and a #2 flat tip screwdriver......once I try it in the wild I will update my review.Update #1: multitools and screwdrivers are heavy and coins can get lost... So I went to the local hardware and bought some zinc washers from the bulk bins for a few cents... I can use Paracord to wear it on my wrist or neck or clipped to my pack...5/16" washer works best......but if you have tiny fingers1/4" washer is not great but fine

HOW ARE YOU ALL NOT 5 STARRING THIS?! Here are the helpful hints to get you there!!!
(Key points: USE A NICKEL! SEEMS BIG BUT IS PERFECT-FITS 60L! LIGHTER THAN MANY BEAR KEGS! SO COMFORTABLE ON BACK!WOW!) After reading the comments I am a little shocked! Hi, I’m the wife. I have the 60L REI Flash pack (which I love and got it on clearance for $100) just got back from our 22 mile heavy duty NC hike and rented an awfully heavy bear keg-my husband said the shape was making it uncomfortable for him plus the weight-no good! This Orange piece of awesome is incredibly light compared to that keg we used. After about just 3 minutes of jimmying this in my pack, (will take seconds now that I know how I like it) I found a good spot for it-almost touching the bottom-with my (cylinder) sleeping bag and sleeping pad a little under it and going up each side towards the front of my pack. At first I thought it was a bit tight...then it was just fine with the room to spare for my extra clothes and everything else needed on top or in the outer compartments. VERY COMFORTABLE in the pack! Don’t even feel it! I truly believe I found the EASIEST way to open/close this thing. USE A NICKEL! It fits perfectly and stays in the grove so you just spin it! You’ll be surprised how easy it is, you’re welcome. Spin each one a little (10ish turns or so) and switch screws so it’s even pressure. It’s not hard at all. The size is great-carry for multiple people, the dog food, utensils, whatever, for days! So happy about this and especially knowing it’ll be safe-and the ease of not having to hang. Fits below the extra room line on the top. Love it!

Not permitted to be used in the Adirondacks next year
Spoke with a ranger, who let me know this bear canister will not be permitted for use in the Adirondacks due to failure. This purchase was single-use for me.

Big, light, tough to open.
There’s a lot to like about this, but some challenges as well.I ordered one and received it promptly. I loaded it with food to see how much would fit and screwed it down. I promptly attempted to remove the lid and found that one of the screws was stuff in the shaft that it screwed into... it seems that the shaft wasn’t properly attached to the plastic, resulting in it being virtually impossible to remove.I contact Amazon and they promptly shipped me a replacement - thank you, Amazon.Once I had my replacement, I packed it up and took it backpacking. There’s a lot to like and a few annoyances with this canister. I’ve used Bear Vaults and Bear Kegs as well, so my comparisons are from that point of reference.Pros:- Large, great capacity- Lightweight, especially for volume- Design provides good pack balance, as advertisedCons:- Lid is difficult to remove and secure... far more so than other canisters I’ve used.- First one received was defectiveTips:- Secure lid a few turns at a time, rotating between screws, to prevent binding- Pack food in order of how you’ll need it- Plan your openings of the canister, it can be a frustrating task... plan so you can minimize the number of times you have to do it.Overall I’m glad I bought it. I hope they make some improvements to the opening, such as moving to a quarter turn or similar type, as it can be frustrating. If you need a big canister though, this one is big and light and the design allows for comfortable, balanced carry.

NOT water proof
I selected this product over others based on the fact that it is the only bear safe I could find that was advertised to be water proof and air tight. I tried two of them, and neither was as advertised. Water just pours right in and out. I don't know if it is a design problem or a manufacturing problem., but the Sabrered customer service folks stopped replying to my emails when I asked them to verify that some of these actually do seal up. This leads me to think that they have a serious problem and aren't willing to own up to it, and it also makes me suspicious of the positive reviews that praise this thing for being water tight. Perhaps I got unlucky, but I don't really see how the thing is supposed to seal. There isn't a large enough surface for the o ring to seat against.Given that this bear safe seems NOT to be waterproof and is much harder and slower to open than competitive products (a limitation I was willing to accept if the product was indeed waterproof), I can't recommend it.

Non autorisé aux Adirondaks
Il semblerai que ce bear canister n' est plus autorisé aux ADK, il as été grugé par un ours déjà.Trop tard pour moi pour le retouner. Il est donc tout neuf et inutilisable

Looks sturdy but used
Just received the cannister. It looks fairly well constructed but the one that I received has obviously been used and returned and then reshipped out. Sort of disappointing for the price point.
