Zaps like crazy!!
my house is possessed by fruit flies brought home from the grocery store!! I added a tiny cup of apple cider vinegar in the drop pan to attract even more to their doom.I got this unit this morning. When I plugged it in the bottom light bulb never even tried to light. I wrote the company an email. We'll see how long it takes them to respond. It sucks but gives me a chance to see how their customer service is and I will update this report when, and if, they decide to respond.Other than the bottom light not turning on I have to tell you this thing is a zapping monster! I always thought my wife was jumpy and rather high strung but I never knew a bug zapper could give a woman PTSD! There is a fraction of time where it goes, "zzz then snaps the air with a crack of plasmatic joy." It doesn't actually kill all the bugs but it sure makes them wish they were dead. If you are checking the "drip tray" for signs of the bugpocalypse you are looking in the wrong location. This bug zapper strews bugs out into 2 arcs of carnage. Some might actually land inside the carcass tray..... if you're lucky. As you can clearly see the fruit flies are tiny. Ive read other reviews where people are saying, "the flies just walk right between the electric grid" are confused. This unit is IMPOSSIBLE for bugs to "walk" through anywhere. They are misleading you. You can clearly see how small the flies are that I'm dealing with. They are a fraction the size of regular house flies.Oh yeah, DO NOT pee on this thing no matter how funny you think it might be. It ain't no cow fence.UPDATE!! I've had this zapper for several days. the bottom light still wwill not turn on. I have not heard back from the company so I contacted Amazon help. They called me back within 5 seconds of asking them to. He was amazingly helpful and I'll have a new bug zapper tomorrow. I have to send them this one. I feel like amazon is recycling bad machines and that sucks for a billion dollar company to be that cheap. Replacement bulbs are not sent out., I had to get a whole new machine. Oh well.

This brand of stand-alone bug zapper is the best I have found so far.
We have tried 3 or 4 different styles of bug zappers over the years, the Bell and Howell style bug zapper being one of them. I came back to this style and manufacturer because their bug zapper was the longest lasting and most reliable. It was also the easiest to keep clean. I did notice that they seem to have shortened the overall length of the zapper. The new one I received appears to have the same-style 2 lights, but only about 8 inches long, with a frame of 11.5 in. long. This will fit in smaller areas. My older B&H light, which finally stopped working after many good years of service, had bulbs about 12 in. long, and a frame of 15 in. I can only hope that this new smaller version will work as well as its older cousin. That one was the Champ.

Works good. I see no probelm
I've got this thing in the kitchen plugged up for those fruit flies around banana or even by the trash can. This thing is a must have to everyone. One day a mosquito came in the house and bite me. I got this from the kitchen and plugged it up at the computer and it killed the sucker. Then I moved it back in the kitchen where it stays. Everyone should have one of these in their house to kill any annoying flying insect. I love it. Has an on and off button on side where the cord comes out. Has a chain in case someone wants to hang it from the ceiling. Seems to be very solid. I haven't had a single problem from it.

Seems to work well, louder than expected (see details). Conditionally recommended
I have a fairly large garage, and for whatever reason, mosquitoes tend to congregate in it. I took a first stab at the problem by getting a small LED-light source zapper. The contents of the tray showed that it was at least partly effective, but the scourge wasn't reduced enough to consider it a resolved problem. After a little research I decided to try the Bell + Howell MONSTER ZAPPER 2,800-Volt, 20-watt unit.Physically, the unit is considerably larger than my other zapper. The biggest schematic difference is the use of CFLs as the light source. While I'd prefer LEDs that use less power and last much longer, CFLs should have a pretty long life. There does appear to be a bit of a discrepancy, as the product listing states a power usage of 20W, while the promo video states that the device has two 20W CFLs. Naturally, the electrified grid must be consuming some power, too. If I put this on my Kill-a-Watt power meter, I'll post the results on this review.I ran the unit a bit initially just to make sure that the unit wasn't defective. After about 10 minutes it was deployed to the garage. A check of the tray in the morning yielded quite a number of dead mosquitoes. While it was a good result to see, I did notice that the cleanup was a bit more involved than you are lead to believe. Specifically, you'll want to make sure to clean remains off of the grid when it's de-energized. After the unit was clean, I turned it back on and walked away, but right before I left the garage I heard a surprisingly loud "crack!". I hung out for another 5 minutes and heard the same sound a couple more times. When I checked the unit, there were a corresponding number of corpses. Nothing wrong, really, it was just much louder than the other unit when killing insects. The zapper seems effective, but the noise may not be what you want if you are using this IN your home. As it's in my garage, it's not a big deal... and really, I think people can get used to most anything, so it may not be a problem for you, either. Conditionally recommended.
